Following on from the successful 'Waste Not, Want Not' conference held in Fota in January, the Cork Green Hub Initiative is hosting a short webinar next Friday 12th April at 10am. The purpose of the webinar is to answer questions from businesses who want to start labelling and managing their waste bins in order to reduce waste and save costs. Under new regulations, since July 2023, waste collection providers will have to: - Provide a recyclable waste bin, a food waste bin, and a general/residual waste bin to all commercial customers. - Weigh all waste collected and communicate details on the weights of the individual bins to customers. - Put all commercial customers on a price plan that ensures the cost to the customer for recyclables and food waste is less than the cost of disposal for residual general waste. This must not result in higher charges for commercial customers. Expert speakers on the webinar will include: Colm O'Brien, Pauline McDonogh (Southern Region Waste Planning Office) and representatives of the Green Hubs partnership from Cork County Council and Cork City Council - Comhairle Cathrach Chorcaí While the Green Hub project is focused on the tourism and hospitality sectors, the webinar will be of interest to any commercial business who wants to start reducing their waste. Great to be involved in important discussion about the latest waste management practices at the Whitsunday Regional Council Waste in the Whitsundays symposium. Our ecoBiz Program Manager Catie Simmons shared how ecoBiz is helping Queensland businesses audit their resource use, manage carbon emissions and save on costs – while reducing waste, water and energy consumption. It was an opportunity to showcase our local ecoBiz Star Partners – like Big 4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort. The Resort team, pictured here, has taken a range of steps to reduce their waste including: ✅Installing bubblers for school groups ✅Replacing plastic single-use water bottles for sale with refillable tin bottles ✅Joining an E-waste recycling program ✅Adding special tubs in their cabins to encourage guests to put eligible items into Containers for Change bins located around the resort. Find out how ecoBiz can help you to reduce your waste and save on costs – it’s free for Queensland businesses. https://bit.ly/4fT4YKe The ecoBiz program is proudly supported through the Queensland Government’s Recycling and Jobs Fund. #QueenslandEnvironment #sustainability #ESG

FOOD WASTE REFORMS ARE COMING! 🍌 🍏 🍞 In 2025, England will introduce new waste disposal regulations, as part of the Simpler Recycling initiative. Taking effect from March 31 2025, all businesses in England will have to separate their waste for recycling. If your business generates more than 5kg of food waste per week, you will have to set up a dedicated disposal system. This means new bins and more collections! March 2025 might seem like a long time away but as a responsible waste management company DCW is encouraging its customers to start implementing changes now to ensure they are prepared. Non-compliance will be met with a hefty fine. In line with our Zero to Landfill policy, the food waste that we collect from our customers is used to produce energy and compost. Contact us to discuss your requirements 👉 https://loom.ly/8UElh1A #Recycling #Recycle #FoodWaste #FoodWasteRecycling #SouthWest #Waste #WasteManagement #Sustainable

Did you know that even food rescue organizations generate food waste? It's unfortunate, but these facilities sometimes receive surplus food that cannot be consumed because it has expired or was received in a compromised state. Innovative Waste Recycling works with these organizations to find sustainable waste management options. Sustainable waste management is vital to the UK’s net zero goals, and we are thrilled to share some fantastic news: five council areas where Biffa collects household waste are ranked within the top 20 in England for recycling! These include our extended partnership with South Oxfordshire District Council which has achieved the highest household waste recycling rate at 61.6% and Vale of White Horse District Council in third place with 60.9%. Both councils have consistently ranked in the top 5 for the past five years. It’s wonderful to see so many residents there taking recycling seriously, but we also encourage everyone to try and reduce the amount of waste they produce in the first place. Small actions like buying unpackaged fruits and vegetables, reusing cardboard boxes, and using leftover food to create another meal can make a big difference. As Global Recycling Day approaches, many of us are taking stock of our environmental impact and considering how we can contribute to a healthier planet. While our industry has successfully implemented recycling systems, there's another significant waste issue that demands our attention in the hospitality sector: food waste. The UK alone sees over 500,000 tonnes of food wasted annually, making it imperative for all hospitality venues to prioritize the fight against food waste. This substantial volume of waste not only incurs financial losses for businesses and hampers efficiency but also exacerbates environmental strain. Mitigating your venue’s carbon footprint can be both simple and rewarding. Introducing effective strategies to manage surplus or unwanted produce is a proactive step. The benefits extend beyond environmental conservation – smart implementation of waste reduction strategies can save businesses not just energy but also money. Cutting costs associated with waste disposal not only enhances profitability but also provides a significant boost to overall business operations. Fortunately, we've compiled insights and tips in an article to guide you in the journey of reducing food waste.
