This study is essential for understanding the extent of drinking water contamination in household storage and clearly outlines the factors contributing to water quality degradation. A multivariable logistic regression model has been employed to identify these key determinants. Furthermore, the article discusses comprehensive household water management practices in relation to fecal contamination. I am pleased to share our recent new publication entitled “Enhancing slow sand filtration for safe drinking water production: interdisciplinary insights into Schmutzdecke characteristics and filtration performance in mini-scale filters” in the journal Water Research. Great thanks to all authors Mandana Samari-Kermani, Jack Schijven, Amir Raoof, Inez Dinkla and Gerard Muyzer. It is a nice cooperation between UvA and UU! The demand for safe drinking water is constantly challenged by increasing biohazards. One widely used solution is implementing indoor-operated slow sand filtration (SSF) as one of the final barriers in water production. In this study, we systematically investigated the influence of various operational parameters of slow sand filters on Schmutzdecke development and SSF removal performance in the successfully developed mini-scale SSF set-up, to contribute to a better understanding and an improvement of slow sand filtration to produce safe drinking water. How Xavier Ensures Safe Drinking Water The public drinking water supplier of a Southeast Asian megacity has been using the ColiMinder "Xavier" to monitor microbiological water quality since 2020. Installed at a central point in the drinking water plant, it measures the incoming raw water and the final chlorinated drinking water, fully automatically and alternately.   Results are available in as little as 15 minutes. In case of a contamination event when threshold is exceeded, the system automatically sends a message to the responsible operator. In this way, plant operators can closely monitor both the incoming raw water quality and the performance of the treatment process and know in real time whether everything is working properly - if not, they can take immediate countermeasures if necessary. The citizens of the city can be sure that the microbiological quality of the drinking water always meets the requirements. It has been known since the 1980s that a mysterious contaminant forms in #chloraminated #drinkingwater, but only now has a Swiss-American research team been able to identify the unknown product in US drinking water systems. The team discovered chloronitramide anion, chemically expressed as Cl–N–NO2−, as an end product of inorganic chloramine decomposition. 💧🧪 🔬 While its toxicity is not currently known, its prevalence and similarity to other toxic compounds is of concern ⚠️ and warrants further study to assess its risk to public health. https://brnw.ch/21wORLy
