How Xavier Ensures Safe Drinking Water The public drinking water supplier of a Southeast Asian megacity has been using the ColiMinder "Xavier" to monitor microbiological water quality since 2020. Installed at a central point in the drinking water plant, it measures the incoming raw water and the final chlorinated drinking water, fully automatically and alternately.   Results are available in as little as 15 minutes. In case of a contamination event when threshold is exceeded, the system automatically sends a message to the responsible operator. In this way, plant operators can closely monitor both the incoming raw water quality and the performance of the treatment process and know in real time whether everything is working properly - if not, they can take immediate countermeasures if necessary. The citizens of the city can be sure that the microbiological quality of the drinking water always meets the requirements. Since the 1980s, its been known that a mysterious contaminant forms in #Chloraminated drinking water, but only now has a Swiss-American research team been able to identify the unknown product in US #DrinkingWater systems. In brief • Researchers have identified a potentially toxic compound – an end product of a chemical used to disinfect drinking water in some countries. • Identifying the compound required a more complete understanding of chemistry and better analytical instrumentation. • Further studies are necessary to assess its public health risk. As in most regions across the country, PFAS has become a growing concern in Maryland. In this article, we discuss the challenges that PFAS poses for WWTPs with a focus on the regulations and actions the State of Maryland is taking to help, along with some steps that wastewater systems can take to prepare for potential upcoming state and federal regulatory action.

It’s Here! The long-awaited final MCL rule has arrived.  Looking forward to discussing next week with my colleagues at the PFAS Environmental Professionals Symposium in Pittsburgh! EPA has set individual MCLs for 5 PFAS plus the HI MCL for the 4 PFAS (as proposed). The final rule standards are - PFOA, PFOS – 4ppt (as proposed) PFNA, PFHxS, HFPO-DA – 10 ppt (different from proposed rule) (PFBS, PFNA, PFHxS, HFPO-DA) – Hazard Index = 1 (as proposed)   The MCL Goals are 0 ppt for PFOA and PFOS; 10 ppt for PFNA, PFHxS, and HFPO-DA; and 1 for the HI. EPA has extended the compliance deadline from 3 to 5 years, with additional two years if capital improvements are needed (as proposed). Studies have shown that many of the state’s water sources contain PFAS at levels exceeding safety thresholds set by regulators. To further increase drinking water safety, the European Commission has updated the EU Drinking Water Directive to limit the amount of harmful substances, such as lead, found in drinking water. The revised Directive was implemented in 2021 and Member States were given two years to transpose it into local legislation. A key change in the updated Directive is the reduction of the maximum lead limit for drinking water from 10 μg/L to 5 μg/L. Accordingly, questions are being asked about lead-leaching alloys in water distribution lines and fittings, with growing interest in the availability and viability of lead-free alternative materials.
