✍ Former journalists! ✍ 1. What do you do for work now? 2. How has your background in journalism helped you in your career pivot? 3. Which skills did you develop as a journalist, and which do you still use in your new career? ***Don't underestimate how important your previous career was!*** For me: 1. I now work at an agency (check out Simantel, and keep an eye on those job openings!) 2. The sheer amount of hats I've worn helps me communicate and collaborate with colleagues in other departments. 3. And which skills do I still use? Honestly, pretty much all of them. Here are a few I can think of: 🔴 Copy editing 🟠 Designing 🟡 Reporting 🟢 Scriptwriting (with some video editing) 🔵 Opinion writing 🟣 Content planning (managing editor/editor-in-chief) ⚪ Social media account management 🟤 Webpage building/management (with analytics) ⚫ Event planning 🔴 Researching/information gathering 🟠 Information distillation/summarization #ContentStrategy #UserExperience #SkillsDevelopment #CareerPivot #RecoveringJournalist

Great list - and so true! I’ve met a lot of content designers and researchers who got their start on the journalism path, myself included. Maybe these fall under categories you already have, but I would add “interviewing” (think stakeholder interviews) and “investigative reporting” (as in finding that one person in the org who has the information you need, and then convincing them to share it with you). Oh, and I now work at U.S. Bank as a content design team manager. And I still love writing!

Policymaker with some light comms work, speechwriting, speaking, etc. And yes. And all the same as you. I also lead a couple of major areas of work for my department, and being able to code switch with different offices and track developments is essential to that work.

I second interviewing! Also, sometimes I put together pitch decks for executives. When I'm stuck on figuring out the order of info in the presentation, I start writing it like it's a hard news story. Usually, the order falls into place after that. :)
