The six common taboos, during Qingming Festival. 1. Ancestral worship is traditionally observed from 9 am to 12 pm, avoiding the period from 1 pm to 3 pm known as "未时" (wèi shí) as a mark of respect to ancestors 2. It's taboo to wear bright colors, heavy makeup, or flashy jewelry during tomb-sweeping, maintaining a solemn atmosphere to honor the departed. 3. Delay returning home after tomb-sweeping, as graveyards are believed to be linked with the underworld. Visit a shopping mall to dispel any negative energy before returning home. 4. Ensure your hairstyle doesn't cover your forehead, and avoid buying new shoes three days before and after Qingming Festival to prevent any mishaps. 5. Avoid wearing items like jade jewelry, red strings, or copper coins during tomb-sweeping, reflecting respect for ancestors and Chinese cultural heritage. 6. On the day of ancestral worship, young children, teenagers born after 2000, and the elderly should wear white attire. #trendyfengshui #serenewongms #王铭汐老师 #Mingxilaoshi

Have you seen the bungalow of the Commissioner of Burdwan? Above a staircase, there is a logo with the letters VOC 1687 written. What is VOC? It means Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, more commonly known as the Dutch East India Company. Between the 17th and 19th centuries, Chinsurah was a prosperous trading post for not only the Dutch but also the Armenian and native Bengali merchants. They primarily traded in saltpetre, spices, cotton and indigo. Chinsurah was one of the many nodal points of import along the Hooghly’s west bank. But why this stretch? The landscape and weather may have a role to play. Pleasure gardens and mansions sprang up with steps leading into the river, away from the noise and crowd. Much of this rich history lies in obscurity, with old gardens now becoming children’s playgrounds or meeting points for the elderly. About 45 graves can be found in the famous Dutch Cemetery, the oldest being from 1743 of one Sir Cornelius Jonge. Built by Louis Taillefert, some other prominent people buried here include Daniel Overbeck, Gregorious Herklots, a high official in the VOC, and George Vernet, another VOC director. Familiar with Ruskin Bond’s novel 'Susanna’s Seven Husbands'? The eponymous Susanna Anna Marina’s tomb can also be found in Chinsurah, who is thought to have inspired Bond's story. The Fort Gustavus has not survived, only its artillery wall remains. It is part of the Hooghly Madrasah now, constructed in the 19th century on the remains of the fortification. Four Dutch cannons lie scattered on the site. Excited to explore the history of Chinsurah, Chandannagar and Serampore with us? Join us on our Other Colonies Day Tour on 17th November! Here are some interesting facts about natural agarwood from Vietnam: 1. Unique Scent: Vietnamese agarwood is known for its particularly rich, sweet, and complex scent, often described as having a deep, earthy, woody aroma with sweet and floral undertones. 2. High Quality: Agarwood from Vietnam is often considered some of the highest quality in the world due to the ideal conditions in the country’s forests, especially in provinces like Quảng Nam, Khánh Hòa, and Nghệ An. 3. Rarity: Natural agarwood is incredibly rare. Only about 7% of Aquilaria trees produce agarwood in the wild, and it takes many years for the resin to develop. Vietnamese agarwood is especially prized because the country’s forests are home to some of the oldest and most mature trees. 4. Historical Use: In Vietnam, agarwood has been used for centuries in traditional medicine, spiritual practices, and cultural rituals. It’s believed to have healing properties and is burned during important ceremonies for its ability to cleanse the space and enhance meditation. 5. Luxury Commodity: Natural agarwood from Vietnam is so precious that it’s sometimes referred to as “black gold.” It’s highly sought after not just for incense but also for perfumes, carvings, and religious artifacts, often selling for incredibly high prices. Learn more about my conversation with Shree Sathya Subramaniam about her heritage on Kish Sarvetha | Concept and Personal Branding Photographer ✨🌸!
I had an interesting conversation with Sathya where we dived into what her heritage and culture means to her. I enjoyed learning about the deep connection Sathya had when she goes to the Kovil and how it gives her comfort. However, at the same time she didn't agree with all practices of this place of worship. If you find this intriguing or relatable, here is an interesting read on how Sathya is able to peacefully navigate through life with both her present life and her life at the Kovil. #heritage #presentlife #connection #srilanka #art #kishsarvetha #beyondtheframe
