The GRIP has the pleasure to organise an international seminar between the 27th and 28th March 2024. This seminar is intended to discuss the results of the the project “A comparative analysis of open science, access and circulation of knowledge in Latin America and Africa” supported by GRIP between August and December 2023. The project consisted of an international survey aimed at nationally rated researchers based in five countries: Brasil, Mexico, Argentina, South Africa and Sénégal. The target populations in these countries share similar structural constraints, although they have essential differences in internationalization and the incidence of research assessment incentives in publishing practices. The survey intended to explore perceptions, publishing experiences in open access, position-takings towards APC costs and the challenges these entail. #openaccess #openscience

MSCA4Ukraine: European Commission provides an additional €10 million to support researchers from Ukraine 🇺🇦 The #MSCA4Ukraine initiative has been supporting displaced researchers from Ukraine under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions since the start of the Russian aggression against Ukraine. Today, the Commission announced a €10 million top-up of this initiative. The funding will enable at least 50 additional researchers who were forced to flee Ukraine to pursue their work on research projects. It will also allow the researchers to access training, #skills and #careerdevelopment opportunities. 💙💛 Since its launch, the MSCA4Ukraine fellowship scheme has supported 125 displaced researchers from Ukraine. Indeed, the scheme has enabled these researchers to continue their important work in academia, businesses, research centres and public institutions based in the EU and countries associated to #HorizonEurope. ➡️ Next steps The next MSCA4Ukraine call will be launched in May. Interested host organisations and researchers will then be able to access the scheme's matchmaking services, download the call’s documents, and apply directly via the MSCA4Ukraine website. The first step for researchers wishing to apply is to prepare an application together with their potential host organisation, who will then submit the proposal on the researcher's behalf. An information day for prospective host organisations will be organised shortly after the call is published. The project consortium: Scholars at Risk Europe at Maynooth University, European University Association, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Associated partners: French hosting program for scientists and artists in exile (PAUSE Program), hosted at Collège de France, Scholars at Risk. https://lnkd.in/ehBEe-zc #MSCActions #ResearchImpactEU #EUfunded #ScienceForUkraine #EUscience #HorizonEU #MSCA European Research Executive Agency (REA) Iliana Ivanova Pia Ahrenkilde Hansen EU Science, Research and Innovation

After 9 months of work, I am pleased to finally be able to present my research project on the views of Cypriot youth towards the Cyprus Problem, through the University of Warwick Undergraduate Research Support Scheme (URSS). The views of Cypriot youth remain an under-researched and often neglected demographic when it comes to both the Cyprus Problem and Cypriot politics – I wanted to explore further. When I first started planning this study, my main aim was not just to understand their viewpoints but to discover the genuine reasoning behind them. Is the Cyprus Problem an issue that young Cypriots think about often? Why is it that so many Cypriots from across the two communities still refuse to engage, or even acknowledge, each other? Why, after 50 years, does the puzzle that is the Cyprus Problem remain unresolved? These were just some of the questions that I felt finally deserved detailed discussion through a series of focus groups and interviews. After the challenge of recruitment and physically conducting the fieldwork, the result was a total of 98,000 words of qualitative data with 32 individual topics discussed. This study was unique from any of the previous research on Cypriot youth with a level of depth on the key issues that has rarely been seen. Equally, there is a particularly strong focus on the opinions and personal experiences of participants. There are several interesting findings and recommendations on an array of topics including education reform, improving the effectiveness of NGOs and what a solution should involve and look like. Inevitably, some issues seemingly had easier answers than others. You can read the full 57-page paper here: https://lnkd.in/dZpYZf3p A special thank you to my participants, who were central to this study: they shared their experiences, stories, opinions and emotions in some often very frank and passionate discussions. This project would also not have been possible without the help of my supervisor Dr Neophytos Loizides (admittedly, this project became more complicated compared to what I had originally planned, so his support was invaluable), and the Warwick Institute of Engagement who provided full funding and opportunities to publicise my research. I look forward to my new challenge: sharing my research with various stakeholders in the New Year.

A new survey published by SweDev today shows that among the 199 respondents from the development research community, 53% have adjusted their research in response to the research funding cuts in the Swedish aid budget. Researchers have changed their research focus to topics more relevant to the Global North, Europe and Sweden. 65% say that their work was either discontinued or significantly altered as a result of the funding cuts. Read an OpEd by SweDev with links to the report and the seminar (where survey results will be published today) here: https://lnkd.in/g5-Wc3-A

During a call yesterday, someone said “we wouldn’t need to find trusted messengers, if a trusted messenger was leading the work”. That stuck with me. Part of moving toward authentic engagement is investing in community PI roles, ethical review boards, clinical practice, etc. Paige Castro-Reyes

#Children as #activeresearchers Every child can engage in research, and every child should have the chance to do so. Research is simply about gathering information and thinking systematically about it. By supporting research for children, we open doors for them to explore, question, and understand the world in a structured and impactful way

Another interesting article in the University World News Africa Edition relating to a summit to limit barriers to research. Some key points to accelerate the development of research impact in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) include: 1. Barriers to Shaping Research Agendas in LMICs 2. Need for Increased LMIC Involvement in Research Decision-Making 3. Establishing Research Networks and Consortiums 4. Capacity Building and Institutional Support 5. Advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 6. Importance of Advocacy and Research Dissemination 7. Collaborative Funding Models In summary, a new Research Impact approach to addressing the barriers to research in LMICs requires a multifaceted approach. Historically, the essence of success include a multitude of strategies and actions built around the above seven areas. The above actions will help LMICs reshape their research agendas in the race to achieve their SDG goals. https://lnkd.in/eDndv4cv
