Weekend listening 🎧🤖🚕 GM's decision to bring Cruise in house was a mini tsunami wave in the industry, though not totally a surprise to those paying attention. Things have been rocky for some time. Now that I live in SF, I see robot cars all the time. It's become normal. I ebike just as much, or more, than I drive around the city, so my perspective of robotaxis is as a pedestrian and cyclist. I feel much safer around a Waymo compared to a human driver. I've almost been hit a few times by human drivers (distracted, dumb driving) and I've noticed that Waymos are much more cautious around pedestrians (and are probably much more likely to "see" me). Because of this, I'm in favor of fewer human drivers and more robots. This is an interesting episode if you're curious about what happened to Cruise and hearing about other trends. One big trend for AV tech and vehicle SW is licensing. Will Waymo eventually license its tech? Will automakers license vehicle SW instead of building in house? Very likely. One thing I'm still on the fence about is Zoox's toaster-looking robotaxis. While I'm open to trying them, I'm still puzzled about the business model. Are they meant to be a shared robotaxi? I would feel uncomfortable sitting face to face with strangers in one of these. 😬 It's also a bummer to see dozens of empty robot cars driving around. Unless we replace human drivers with robots, traffic is going to get worse. https://lnkd.in/ggP6nd38

Alex Kantrowitz recently interviewed NVIDIA’s Danny Shapiro in a lively conversation about #selfdriving vehicles. Questions included: “How far are we from autonomous driving?” and “Is NVIDIA taking what it learns from cars and applying it to robots, and vice versa, learning from robots and applying it to cars?” Listen to the podcast to learn the answers to these questions and more. https://lnkd.in/gBEmqtCi

Delighted to be on the Embedded.fm podcast this week! Elecia and Christopher White chatted with me about checksums, CRCs, and why I eventually found out that Math Is Not The Answer to some of the most important questions in checksum-class error detection codes. Many have seen the basic ideas. But it turns out there are plenty of ways to go astray, and lots of fault detection opportunities left on the table if you don't learn about the details. Examples: - Using mod 256 or mod 65536 for a Fletcher-style checksum is a TERRIBLE idea. You might just as well use a single-sum checksum instead. You can do much better with a different odd modulus, and it doesn't really matter if it's a prime number or not. - The IEEE 802.3 CRC is mediocre on a good day, and you can do WAY better with other known feedback polynomials. And so on... Hope you enjoy the listen! https://lnkd.in/eKcNGqSq

Two experts - one from CMU, Philip Koopman, and one from MIT, Bryan Reimer .... hum 🧐 Both provide really interesting perspectives on Cruise and the future of robotaxis, with fantastic moderation by the one, and only Junko Yoshida! Three of my favorite experts on one panel, of course, I am going to love it! https://lnkd.in/ebvici_e
