Regional Stock Exchanges Unite with EBRD to Boost Capital Markets. Seven Central European stock exchanges and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) have signed an agreement in Bratislava aimed at the joint development of capital markets in the region, the Budapest Stock Exchange (BSE) told MTI. The main areas of the memorandum of understanding include the expansion of primary markets, the development of an institutional framework to support long-term retail savings, the promotion of retail investor participation, the promotion of new technologies, the enhancement of the efficiency of the regional capital market infrastructure, and the sharing of best practices. Well-functioning capital markets are the foundation for the development of the economy, and in particular of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). These markets provide a vital source of finance for fast-growing and innovative companies and give the public the opportunity to share in economic success. Richárd Végh, CEO of BSE, said in a statement that Central European stock exchanges play a key role in shaping and developing the local capital market ecosystem. BSE’s priority is to play an active role in promoting this and in implementing initiatives that support economic growth and contribute to the long-term competitiveness and sustainable development of the region. According to the agreement, regional cooperation is an effective way to address common challenges by allowing for a more efficient use of resources and encouraging the integration of regional capital markets through cross-border business flows. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is committed to developing regional capital markets and supporting local ecosystems. The agreement was signed on November 13, by representatives of the Budapest Stock Exchange (BSE), the Bratislava Stock Exchange (BSSE), the Bucharest Stock Exchange (BVB), the Bulgarian Stock Exchange (BSE), the Ljubljana Stock Exchange (LJSE), the Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE), and the Zagreb Stock Exchange (ZSE), as well as the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. At a recent WBR Insights - Capital Markets TradeTech Europe panel, Sandeep V. S., Head of Product Strategy and Growth at ION Markets (Equities), shared his insights on emerging markets. He emphasized the importance of having a reliable technology infrastructure in place to mitigate operational and reputational risks, especially with the increasing investor interest in these markets. Sabnani also discussed India's transition to T+1 settlement, with potential moves towards T0 and instant settlement in the future. He pointed out that while markets are eager to expand, investors must consider the challenges posed by varying settlement regimes and currencies. I found his perspective on this topic to be quite thought-provoking. For more details, you can refer to The Trade’s coverage of the event.

Ten Years of Capital Market Connectivity: A Milestone in China's Financial Opening China's capital market has achieved a decade of groundbreaking progress with the 10th anniversary of the Stock Connect program linking the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong. Celebrations during a high-profile forum in Hong Kong underscored the initiative's success in facilitating cross-border investment, improving market liquidity, and contributing to China's high-quality economic development. The success of Stock Connect has been instrumental in integrating China's A-share market into global financial indices such as MSCI and FTSE Russell. By the end of September 2024, foreign institutions and individuals held RMB 3.13 trillion (USD 430 billion) in onshore Chinese stocks—a record milestone that reflects growing international confidence in China's markets. The program has also strengthened Hong Kong's role as an international financial hub. As of November 2024, 40 mainland Chinese companies had listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, surpassing the 34 listings during the same period in 2023. High-profile IPOs, such as those of SF Holdings and Midea Group, illustrate the expanding role of Hong Kong as a launchpad for Chinese firms aiming to access global capital. #MSCI #StockConnect #Ashare #CSRC #financialhub #FTSERussell #IPO
