Networking and making connections is about more than shaking someone's paw at an event. It may start there (but chances are it started long before). When we meet someone new and hear their story, the connection begins. Perhaps we've heard something interesting, a way to team up in the future or another reason to follow up. What generally happens next is that we ask our own network for their opinion of the new acquaintance. This is an important step and the part that we often forget happens behind the scenes. A few things can happen: - our network responds positively, sweet - our network responds negatively, uh oh - there is no information When developing relationships, it's important that we increase our touch points around the community. We need to increase the number of "sweet" responses in order to continue to expand. It's obvious what happens if we start hearing "uh oh". But when the person is unknown, it can be tricky to feel confident or it will take a little more time. When people tell me that they worry about "meeting the right person" at an event, I tend to think this misses the point. These connections will come as we build trust in the community. We never really know when the right person is the cousin of who we're talking to, or their friend or associate. To assume we're talking to the wrong person not only closes a door quickly, but it can impact our reputation in the community. Especially when they're interested in what we do. Most importantly tho, the more we engage in the community, the more we share what we do, and the more we help others find their connections, the better the odds are that the community will reciprocate. Networking is as much about meeting a specific person as it is building a reputation in the community for when that right person comes into our orbit. So, toss your paw out there and meet someone new. Have fun with it and build a network that focuses on helping others get connected too and your network will also grow rapidly. howl yeah
