Asset owner portfolios are very heavily weighted towards public equity markets, and typically large companies in developed economies, whereas much of the negative impacts of climate change are generated by private and state-owned companies. This presents a potential flaw in the universal owner theory. #universalowner #InvestmentMagazine https://lnkd.in/gMkbEh4a

This is a great report from Ninety One's Daisy Streatfeild on strategic asset allocation that addresses climate change. This was the subject of a recent session at Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC)'s London Climate Week event moderated by Mahesh Roy. This report argues that we should move from reducing financed emissions (in the portfolio) to financing reduced emissions (in the real economy). I could not recommend this more if you're an asset owner thinking about how to design your climate approach with real economy impact in mind. https://lnkd.in/egzQTwDk

IMPACT FUNDS - Climate funds are facing unexpected turbulence. Despite a 6% rise in global assets for mutual funds and ETFs with a climate mandate, outflows are set to hit nearly $24 billion in 2024, marking a potential first-ever annual redemption. As the consequences of climate change become more tangible and costly, the question arises: is this a risk or an opportunity for investors? Hortense Bioy, CFA, head of sustainable investing research at Morningstar Sustainalytics, notes that concerns over greenwashing, high interest rates, and regulatory uncertainty have all contributed to the shift. Yet, some investors are still doubling down on companies offering innovative climate solutions. The demand for clean energy investments remains high, with a staggering $4.5 trillion needed annually by 2030 to meet net zero goals. The question remains: will this trend reverse, or is the market signaling deeper challenges? In the world of #netzero transition pathways, activist investors that put pressure on listed companies to adopt sustainable practices generate a useful spectacle: difficult questions surrounding hard-to-transition companies, notably oil majors, tend to receive ample media attention. The recent actions of Dutch campaign group, Follow This come to mind, for example. However, only 30 of the world’s top 100 carbon emitters are listed on a stock exchange. That means what happens in private is just as important as the latest high-profile shareholder resolution. How can private equity and private credit investors boost their climate-related engagements? Many thanks to Mahesh Roy and Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC) for the conversation. #stewardship #private markets

💡 Our Investor Strategies Programme Director Mahesh Roy spoke in the first of a series of interviews from Net Zero Investor on stewardship in private markets and we're grateful for the opportunity to share our research. 📣 Mahesh outlined how stewardship and engagement strategies can be employed and how investors can appropriately use their influence to encourage decarbonisation down to the portfolio company level. 📝 We lay out our recommendations for the private equity and private debt asset classes as part of our Net Zero Investment Framework (NZIF) 2.0. "Private market investors have the money, capacity, technical knowledge, and most importantly, agility, to be owners that engage meaningfully with companies on decarbonisation. The integration of climate change considerations into investment strategies and processes is crucial for both value creation and risk management in a world in transition. So, when investors exit private markets investments, the portfolio companies they have worked with will be better aligned with the changing world in which they operate."
