When asked to think of a person who demonstrates leadership qualities, I often reflect on my favorite athletes, Sidney Crosby and Rafael Nadal. Their dedication, resilience, and integrity on and off the ice and court are inspiring to myself and many others. A few years ago, I participated as a mentor in the BMO Mentorship Program at the Canadian Centre for Advanced Leadership in Business at Haskayne, which was led by Dr. Cari Din a former Olympian, now professor, practitioner, and academic in leadership. I was eager to learn from her wealth of experience. Her sessions, where she shared insights from her journey as an Olympian, coach, and professor, truly resonated with me and shaped my understanding of effective leadership. This week, I was surprised and disappointed to learn about the allegations against Canada’s national soccer team, accused of using drones to spy on New Zealand’s practice sessions prior to their opening match in the Paris Olympics. This led to the suspension of several staff, including Canada’s head coach. I couldn’t help but think about leadership. How does this lack of leadership exist in our National Sport Organizations? What kind of culture exists within these organizations where staff feel pressured to engage in unethical behaviours? Unfortunately, this is not the only scandal involving a Canadian National Sport Organization in recent years. Hockey Canada has also faced significant controversies. These incidents raise important questions about the values we uphold and the leadership we demonstrate in sports. It's a reminder that true leadership goes beyond winning—it’s about integrity, fairness, and respect. Does this damage Canada’s reputation on the world stage? Is this considered cheating, or is this something to be expected in hyper-competitive environments? #Leadership #Integrity #SportsEthics #CanadianSports #Olympics #Mentorship #TrueLeadership #ValuesInSport

A Journey to overcome the age bias in Taekwondo & Sports Leadership Embarking on the path of leadership within Sports Administration as a young enthusiast has been a challenging yet empowering journey. In a landscape where experience often takes center stage, overcoming the obstacles of age bias has become a personal mission—one that I hope will inspire others to challenge stereotypes and step confidently into leadership roles. The prevailing belief that effective leadership requires a wealth of experience was a formidable hurdle. However, rather than succumb to these doubts, I chose to view my youth as an asset, bringing fresh perspectives and unwavering passion to the table. Skill development emerged as my guiding principle in dismantling age bias within the administrative realm. Just as one refines kicks and forms in the dojang. I dedicated time to understanding the intricacies of organizational dynamics, event planning, and the nuances of sports governance. It became evident that leadership is not about the number of years but about continuous learning, adaptability, and a commitment to growth. It also cannot be understated, the importance of mentorship from seasoned leaders within the community. Learning from their experiences and tapping into their wisdom provided invaluable guidance, giving me the opportunity to navigate the challenges of leadership with a balanced perspective. Thankfully, for many who gave me the opportunity, they never saw my youth as a negative but embraced it as a unique strength. As I continue to hold positions of responsibility within the sports community, my hope is that my story serves as a beacon of inspiration. Age bias can be navigated and overcome, and the youth have a vital role to play in shaping the future of sports. #sportsbusiness #sportsbusiness #myjourney #taekwondo

I can't echo enough how much being a part of this organization developed me as a professional and particularly, set me up to be in sales. I'm glad to see an article recognizing it. I'll add 3 of my main takeaways from my 4 years, but I could go on and on, and want to thank my bosses, Rachael Rayford and Jason Maynard, as well as my peers. 1. Clear and effective communication - Nothing teaches you to establish and maintain credibility like being a referee. As soon as you hesitate, look unconfident, or misstep, you lose credibility you can't regain. This translates daily into my work. 2. Accepting and giving feedback - Built into the fabric of the RecWell Sports Programs is feedback. I had to give feedback to my bosses, peers, and people I was leading every shift. Not to mention, Indiana basketball players also give you plenty of feedback as a referee. I not only can accept feedback, but I desire it. 3. Watching Film/Self-Awareness - Not all your development can come from people giving you feedback. I get to watch film of my sales calls and see where I can improve, just like I did for refereeing. I watched as much film, if not more, as a referee as I did as a varsity athlete. It's now a staple of my growth.
I am excited to share this article highlighting the outstanding impact and achievements of our Purdue RecWell Sport Programs. This quote from Keith Woolems says it all "You learn to care about something bigger than yourself and someone other than yourself. This is a unique place where you care about your development, your coworker’s development and the growth of the program as a whole. It’s a shared experience.” A huge thank you for all the hard work by both our RecWell professional staff and the student leaders. Growing up in the 90s, a lot of us were fans of the legendary Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. They won multiple championships due in part to the famous triangle offense, which prioritized team dynamics. This approach to leadership can certainly reap some benefits, especially finding the right balance between structure, constraints, communication, and freedom. Creating triangles of interaction can be the key to success for any team. Learn more about how the triangle basketball offense can teach us about successful teamwork here: https://lnkd.in/eYDnyNx5 #leadership

I am so far down the rabbit hole of 15U club volleyball you can't believe it. The lessons I learn from my daughter and her team of twelve young women that train together tirelessly are mind blowing. Here are three of the Top Ten Leadership Lessons I am picking up from young women in volleyball: 1. Young women appreciating the size and strength of their bodies is paradigm bending. Imagine at 15 falling in love with your towering frame, thick thighs, strong butt, and big feet—game changing. 2. Young women owning their power and capacity is a revolutionary act—bumping up against limitations and going beyond what they think is possible develops neural pathways that change the world. 3. Young women spending hours on drills and strength training creates physical mastery and discipline. Most success comes from the practice that no one ever sees—training in excellence is underrated. 🚀 Leadership Insights from Dawn Staley: Key Lessons for Business Success 🚀 As a proud Philadelphia native and University of South Carolina alum, I'm continually inspired by Dawn Staley's remarkable journey and leadership. From her roots in Philly to becoming a legendary figure in collegiate basketball, her story exemplifies the essence of great leadership. 🐓 🦅 Dawn’s impressive accomplishments speak volumes: 3 Olympic gold medals as a player, 1 as a coach, and 3 national championships with USC, including the historic undefeated 2023-2024 season. But it's her approach to leadership that truly stands out: 🔹 Team First Mindset: Staley’s approach prioritizes team success over individual accolades, as shown by the widespread playing time in their win against Iowa. 🔹 Ability to Adjust: Staley adapted her roster to counter Iowa’s strengths, improving the team’s presence in the paint. 🔹 Unbridled Belief: Staley’s strong faith drives her success. She openly shares her belief, stating, “God rips your heart out and he makes you believe!” Dawn Staley’s storied career serves as a powerful example of exemplary leadership. Her journey offers invaluable lessons that can inspire us in both our personal and professional lives. 🏀 🏀 #Leadership #Inspiration #DawnStaley #PhiladelphiaPride #USC #Empowerment

Post-nominals are typically abbreviated letters placed after a person's name to indicate a completed qualification. OLY is used by registered athletes who have participated in the Olympic Games as a simple, yet nice variation for this cohort. Maybe we should have a universal SMP standing for Sport Management Professional, to reflect expertise and dedictaion in the field of sport management? What about CES for Chief Executive in Sport, quickly signifying the holder's top-level leadership and proficiency in the sports management field?
