The Net Zero initiatives for 2050 are of paramount importance to the preservation of our environment. Electrification serves as a pivotal driving force and a crucial factor in assisting us in achieving these objectives. As we progress, it has been demonstrated that electrifying new construction projects is more cost-effective compared to retrofits. However, it would be highly inefficient to concentrate all of our efforts on this single approach. Such a strategy would impose excessive strain on the grid, particularly during peak cooling and heating periods. Therefore, it is imperative that we explore alternative strategies to ensure continued progress towards Net Zero and electrification while simultaneously maintaining efficiency.

Addressing the invisible carbon gap is post 10 of 31 to try and brighten your August summer lull by sharing the fabulous projects that Mott MacDonald are involved in. Net zero is now widely integrated within government and corporate sustainability agendas. But when nature is missing from the baseline used to set net zero targets, neither the losses in carbon storage resulting from damage to the natural environment or the emission reductions are captured, creating an invisible carbon gap. In the latest publication from the Net-Zero Infrastructure Industry Coalition (NZIIC), written as a result of a workstream led by Mott MacDonald, “Nature: the missing piece of the net zero puzzle” highlights how the carbon sequestration potential of nature can be used to set a net zero baseline, and to assess whole life carbon within construction. The NZIIC regularly publishes reports and high-quality guidance on key aspects of achieving net zero. If you would like to access any of the publications and find out more about the work of the coalition, visit https://mottm.ac/3Lj6tDs

We’re designing transport projects for a low-carbon future, from start to finish. This means reducing emissions at every stage of the process – from material selection to operations and even end-of-life planning. By comparing traditional designs with carbon-sensitive ones, we can quantify real carbon savings. Nice to see my TSA Management colleague Craig Rodgers hosting an interesting panel at FuturePlace’s Net Zero Construction conference. Some key themes: - Gov’t spec teams need to consider performance based specifications …without them we’re stifling innovation and putting an anchor on our net zero journey - net zero and nature positive can be achieved in unison through courageous innovation and collaboration - scope 3 emissions in our industry are by far the biggest part of our footprint ….its time we all start measuring and reducing them as part of our net zero strategies. If done well, with a pragmatic approach….practical decarbonisation solutions can help deliver projects on time, to cost and quality targets. Well chaired Hudson Worsley. #sustainabledevelopment #greenbuilding #netzero #nzc24
