Rainforests are vital habitats for many Wildlife species and are often described as the lungs of the Earth due to the oxygen they provide, but did you know they actually supply about 28% of Earth's oxygen, with 70% actually produced by plants that live in the oceans, also vital habitat, such plants include kelp, phytoplankton and algal plankton. Other land plants contribute 2%. Phytoplankton also consumes carbon dioxide on a scale equivalent to forests and other land plants. Boulder checks, also known as check dams or check weirs, are structures used to slow down and capture flowing water in river systems. By slowing down the flow of water, boulder checks help reduce soil erosion along riverbanks. These structures facilitate groundwater recharge by allowing water to percolate into the ground. The WWF’s recent Living Planet report reveals alarming biodiversity loss – a 73% decline in wildlife populations since 1970.   Habitat destruction, largely driven by unsustainable food systems, over-harvesting, and pollution, particularly in Asia-Pacific, pose significant threats to biodiversity.   What impact has this had on Ecosystems? 🔻 Freshwater ecosystems: 85% decline 🔻Terrestrial ecosystems: 69% decline 🔻Marine ecosystems: 56% decline These ecosystem collapses, including the melting of Himalayan glaciers and coral reef die-offs, impact climate regulation, clean air, and water, and threaten essential natural processes like pollination.
