Did you know that 46% of the seats in South Africa’s parliament are held by women? While this is a great achievement, it also highlights a problem. Even with this progress, women in our country still face serious injustices like gender-based violence, rape, and femicide. It is clear that we still have a long way to go. However, I want to honour the women of 1956, whose courage, strength, and commitment to women’s rights helped shape the progress we see today. To the women of 1956, we honour and celebrate you. To the women of 2024, we have powerful examples of what our collective strength can achieve. We know better; let's continue to do better #WomensDay #WomenLeadership

On National Women's Day, we honour the brave women of South Africa who stood up against discrimination and injustice. Though apartheid may be a thing of the past, women today still face barriers to equality, a problem that affects us all. Empowering women is crucial for a better world, and it’s a responsibility we must all bear. Let’s continue to advocate for women’s rights, honour their contributions, and work towards a future where equality is not a goal but a reality. #womensday

Thank you, Comitato europeo delle regioni , for shedding light on this crucial issue. 📢 Violence and bias in politics remain harsh realities for too many locally elected women in Europe: 🔸 32% have faced violence in politics. 🔸 1 in 10 decided not to run for office again due to this violence. Are political parties doing enough? Jasna Gabric asks them the right question: "Do you really give a chance to women, or is it just something written in your documents and part of your protocols?" Lydia Mutyebele underscores the daily struggle for equality: "As a woman politician, you have to assert yourself. A woman politician has been prejudiced by her status as a woman, and every day, you have to deconstruct these prejudices and stereotypes to show that a woman politician or a man politician is the same thing." It’s clear: statements of goodwill are not enough. We need concrete rules to ensure women's full and safe participation in political life. 🔗 Read the full CEMR study to learn more: https://lnkd.in/d6cxkmzN #WomenInPolitics #ViolenceInPolitics #GenderEquality #LocalLeaders

National Women's Day, observed annually on August 9th, has its roots in South Africa. This day marks the anniversary of the great women’s march of 1956 when approximately 20,000 women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria, protesting the country's pass laws during the apartheid era. The day is based around the same principles as International Women’s Day (celebrated in March) and strives for much of the same freedoms and rights. Here are 5 ways we can recognize and celebrate the women in our lives and workplaces: 1. Amplify women's voices: Share and promote the work and ideas of female colleagues. 2. Mentor and sponsor: Offer guidance to women in your field, and advocate for their advancement. 3. Address bias: Speak up against gender stereotypes and discriminatory practices. 4. Support women-owned businesses: Buy from and partner with women entrepreneurs. 5. Recognize achievements: Take time to acknowledge the accomplishments of women in your personal and professional circles. How are you celebrating the women in your life today? Share in the comments. #NationalWomensDay #WomensEmpowerment #GenderEquality

As a Development organization, we believe women's participation in politics is crucial for achieving gender equality and inclusive decision-making. In Africa, women face various barriers to political participation, including cultural and social norms, limited access to education and resources, and discrimination. To promote equal participation in decision-making and achieve SDG Gender Equality, Africa can: 1. Implement quotas and affirmative action policies to increase women's representation in politics. 2. Provide training and capacity-building programs for female politicians and aspirants. 3. Address violence against women in politics and create a safe and supportive environment. 4. Promote gender-sensitive political party reforms and inclusive candidate selection processes. 5. Increase access to education and economic empowerment opportunities for women. 6. Challenge harmful gender stereotypes and biases through awareness campaigns and media engagement. 7. Strengthen institutional frameworks and laws supporting gender equality in politics. 8. Encourage male allies and champions of gender equality to support and amplify women's voices. 9. Foster partnerships and collaborations between women's organizations, civil society, and governments. 10. Celebrate and showcase women's political achievements and successes to inspire future generations. By implementing these strategies, Africa can enhance women's political participation, foster inclusive decision-making, and drive progress towards SDG Gender Equality.
Worldwide, 113 countries have never had a woman Head of State, and currently, only 26 countries are led by a woman. Full democracy requires the equal participation of women in all its processes. Latest facts and figures on women in politics from UN Women: https://lnkd.in/ge7RNJ9D
