The stalemate between the provincial unions and the New Zealand Rugby Players Association over the governance of New Zealand Rugby last week made me think of the late Jock Hobbs, and his tireless effort back in the 90s to keep the Black jersey alive. Sure, the national body needs a governance overhaul to run an increasingly complex organisation that balances the commercial interests of the game and its private equity partner with that of a sustainable grassroots amateur game, but it feels like much more work is needed among the member unions. This isn’t simply a case of widespread cleanouts – the institutional knowledge and love of the grassroots game is integral to the national sports body, but the amount of politicking involved would make even the most cynical Wellington insider blush. Some novel thinking is needed to improve the governance across all levels of rugby if it’s going to turn the tide of dwindling participation. And heck, with the recent changes to the incorporated societies law it’s a good time for some of the country’s leading directors to get involved and set the direction for all of those kinds of entities. When Sky New Zealand was grappling with its own existential crisis a few years back, it made clear that premium sports, and rugby in particular, were a cornerstone of its future – hence the rights deal that included an equity sweetener for New Zealand Rugby at the time. That was very much on display in the recent earnings from the US giants, who went through their own bloodletting as Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery booked hefty impairment charges against their cable networks. Warners is coming under growing pressure to ditch assets or carve itself up and you do wonder whether the rounding error that is TV3 to the multinational would be better served under a different owner. It’s already outsourced its news operations to Stuff and looks like it’s in the process of backing out of the Bravo TV joint venture (which consistently surprises me at how well it just chugs along under the radar), and I’m sure it could be put to better use by a local media company with a broader strategy – albeit, one with the fortitude to take on the tall order of erasing all that red ink. The big question for local broadcasters is where NZR and SAANZAR end up in deciding how to carve up their rugby rights. It’s not going to be the single chunk Sky swallowed last time and the infighting over the future of the domestic competition won’t make things easier.
