Don’t hit that tree! That is often the focus in a forest, but it is the wrong focus. There is no value in the tree, except to birds and squirrels. Obstacles should be ignored. Easy, right? Go down a crowded street and ask me if the other cars should be ignored, and I will say yes. The value is not in the other cars, the value is in moving forward. Snow skiers going through a forest of trees at incredible speed know this. If they say in their heads “Don’t hit the tree!”, they know they will. I heard a race car driver talk about his first lesson in not hitting a wall. His instructor had him head straight for a wall. He stared at that approaching wall and the instructor had to turn the car to miss the wall. What the race car instructor and the skier will tell you is you don’t look at the tree or the wall, you look at the clear path. If all you see is the clear path, you will not hit a tree or hit the wall. Where your vision goes, your thoughts and body will follow. Your value is based on your future. Focus on the clear path ahead and that is where you will go. You are most valuable when seeing the opportunities, the clear path ahead. Then you can take advantage of them. That is the path to get where you want to go.

What do we do when we are afraid, we grasp onto something tightly. If you were ever driving in a car that was going out of control, holding the steering wheel tighter is not going to help steer the car. In fact, having a looser, more flexible grip can help us steer better. And such is a metaphor for life. Being loose & flexible even in the unknown is the key to making choices in the moment that serve your highest good. Take for instance, you are growing your business and do not yet know where it is headed. If you hold on to tightly to trying to control things the new can not be born. We must let go and allow, after all, we did ask for a different creation in our life.
