On #WorldFisheriesDay, we’re highlighting the importance of Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) in fisheries—a key recommendation in @Oceana Canada’s 2024 Fishery Audit. IKS are dynamic knowledge systems that draw on deep, place-based understanding, multi-generational perspectives, and cultural practices that are essential for sustaining local ecosystems[RN1] . By pairing IKS with Western science, we can ensure long-term sustainability of fisheries, advance reconciliation, and protect marine biodiversity for future generations. The New Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research is calling for papers for its special issue 'Freshwater fish in focus: knowledge, values and management'.   The journal is seeking boundary-pushing contributions from across the natural and social sciences and kaupapa Māori research that provide insight into the trajectory of freshwater fish and fisheries in Aotearoa New Zealand.    Freshwater fish in Aotearoa New Zealand are unique and highly valued. Many of our native species are threatened and face an uncertain future, while the place of introduced species in Aotearoa is increasingly contested. Freshwater fish communities face a legacy of habitat modification, species introductions and overfishing, which are compounded by climate change and new invasions. There is an urgent need to understand how fish and human communities alike are responding to these changes.   This special issue will be guest-edited by Finnbar Lee from Cawthron Institute, Kiely McFarlane from Cawthron Institute, Lauren Hitt from the University of Canterbury, Siobhan Nuri from The University of Waikato, Olivier Raven from The University of Waikato, and Marc Tadaki from Lincoln University (NZ). 📢 Leibniz-Institut für Ostseeforschung Warnemünde, one of the EFFECTIVE partners, has published a paper on Perspectives and Scenarios for Coastal Fisheries in a Social-Ecological Context: An Ecosystem Service Assessment Approach in the German Baltic Sea. 🌊 5th Assembly of Marine Sciences of Galicia     Last Friday, FOL participated in the 5th Assembly of Marine Sciences of Galicia. 🔍 Haritz Ayarza Molinero, researcher at Future Oceans Lab, presented the study: "Fishing into the Future: Vulnerability to Climate Change in Galicia's Small-Scale Fisheries." The research highlights that climate risk in small-scale fisheries depends on the target species, the diversity of catches, and, above all, social factors. Species with low mobility or sessile species are particularly susceptible to climate change impacts, presenting urgent challenges for artisanal fisheries in Galicia. 🎣 Understanding these vulnerabilities is key to protecting fishing communities and fostering a sustainable future for the oceans. What do a babbling brook, a breathtaking waterfall, and a captivating lake sunset have in common? Water! 🌊 To celebrate #WorldWaterDay, we’re shouting out our science partners who help us improve our knowledge of aquatic resources that provide drinking water, a source for waterpower, recreational opportunities, and sustain a diversity of aquatic ecosystems in the province. We work with many Indigenous, federal, provincial, municipal, and university partners, and non-government organizations, such as conservation authorities, across the province. Some partnership examples include: • Saugeen-Ojibway Nation: Using a two-eyed seeing approach that combines Indigenous ecological knowledge with Western science to study lake whitefish, a valuable fish species, in Lake Huron. • Great Lakes Fisheries Commission: Coordinating fisheries research and management among state, provincial, Indigenous, and federal agencies to help ensure sustainability of fisheries resources and support healthy Great Lakes ecosystems. • Universities and industry partners: Studying how mercury moves through watersheds to evaluate the effectiveness of forest management guidelines to mitigate risk.
