How do I refer to disability respectfully? I've educated more creative teams and agencies about best practices for disability inclusive marketing than anyone else in the world, and this is still the number one question we get asked. This is such a nuanced question because: 1. There's no community in the world that has unanimous consensus about terminology, but there are best practices. Organized preferences vs personal preference always has to be considered. 2. Within disability, there are subcategories of communities based on disability and culture. (e.g. Autistic and Down Syndrome community have differences in their preferences) 3. Language evolves! Within all cultures, some things that were cool 10 years ago are no longer acceptable. Disability is no different. 4. Disabled people are not centered: we see time and time again organizations (and honestly, businesses!) who prioritize folks with adjacency to disability rather than disabled adults themselves. My husband and dad love me, but they should not be your go to source on how to refer to me! Myself and the disability community should be! So what are marketers to do? - Take our training on inclusive language - Use the preferred terminology of the community you are speaking about - Add an inclusive language guidelines statement on the backend of your website next to your accessibility statement so you can link anyone with pushback to the community's preferences (99% won't argue with you further if you do this) - Have us on a slack retainer to help you write a thoughtful response, and show that you genuinely are learning with and from the disability community. #DisabilityInclusion #DisabilityMarketing #Disability #DEI #DEIA #DEIB #InclusionMatters #InclusiveMarketing
