Not every day is suit-and-tie... Today was a boots-on-the-ground kind of day. I joined our safety director for pop-up inspections, hand-delivered hard cash bonuses to our drivers on-site, and connected with clients and operators out in the field. Their feedback? They love our unwavering commitment to safety. This business isn’t built from behind a desk. I’ve never shied away from hard work or getting my hands dirty. Leadership, in my book, is about leading by example—and today was no exception. Moliere, a famous French playwright from the 1600s, reminds us that accountability is more than what we do when he says, “It is not only what we do, but also what we do not do, for which we are accountable.” After all, as a leader you are the Captain of your ship. You need to sail your ship to safety regardless of the weather and amidst any crisis. What you do, or don’t do, will determine your success. Accountability is owning that outcome, whether it's smooth sailing or rough waters. Mary Barra is the CEO of General Motors and she provides an outstanding example of accountability. Fortune magazine named her the Crisis Manager of the Year in 2014 because that year GM faced faulty ignition switches that led to numerous accidents and deaths. Barra didn’t shy away from the situation. She took full responsibility, initiating recalls, implementing policy changes, and publicly owning the mistakes. Her accountability in the face of crisis helped restore trust in the company and reinforced the idea that true leaders own their challenges. #leadership #accountability

Last week, I had the opportunity to take part in U.S. Department of Transportation's fourth Transportation and Public Safety Summit to discuss the future of Traffic Incident Management (#TIM). As transportation leaders, our days begin and end with safety. The National Roadway Safety Strategy provides a comprehensive approach to significantly reducing crashes resulting in death and serious injuries on our roadways. TIM operations are key to this as we work to enhance responder training, increase public awareness and improve motorist safety. The Nebraska Department of Transportation looks forward to working with the TIM Executive Leadership Group on moving the needle towards a safer transportation network. #visionzero
