Scholars studying resilience rarely have an opportunity to observe entities that are undergoing adversity in real time. And so one of the reasons that we did it is because that was the a context in which we could observe these adventure racing teams. And it was also a context in which we could take a look at the micro dynamics of what they were actually doing. Venture racing has different types of activity, OK, So there's tracking, generally speaking, there's bicycling and there's paddling. And I interviewed this team before they did the race. And in at the beginning of the first Viking, one of the team members broke the derailer on his bike and. What happened in the next few seconds was just extraordinary. His team members had come up with other kinds of tools that they had. I think they had a Leatherman tool and they were just fixing it, you know, so they were able to survive that. Let me just talk about that with respect to what happened during COVID. I mean, think about it. You know, we did reconfigure, we did redeploy, We did repurpose, think about the distilleries. That we're using their resources and manufacturing capabilities to produce hand sanitizer. We saw athletic apparel companies that were making masks and hospital gowns. So I I think there were other, I mean I think this idea of redeploying, repurposing and reconfiguring showed up a lot in in adventure racing and I think we've seen that in in many of our companies and industries across the pandemic.

This is such a refreshing approach to examining elite endurance performance through testing in the field. Bak Klaris et al put 12 elite cyclists through a 6 hour simulated road race. Then then measured different power outputs, fat oxidation and lactate during and after the simulation. Some very interesting observations regarding durability with potential implications for training and racing...
