The Olympic Games are over. It has been a glorious spectacle of sporting achievements, hard work, sweat, tears, grit, resilience, and ultimately, triumph of the human spirit. From the public policy angle, there are also interesting observations and learning points. A look at the medals table demonstrates a fairly accurate correlation between medal success and the development trajectory of a country. That makes sense. While there are always exceptions, generally, a country that has done well in developing itself economically, is better able to invest in its human capital and the associated infrastructure to spot, nurture and maximise its sporting talents. In turn, having worldclass sportspeople tends to contribute towards sporting excellence, better fitness and health outcomes, cultural vibrancy, and a more creative and dynamic economy. This thus forms a virtuous cycle that mutually reinforces itself. Singapore has done well economically, going from the proverbial third world to first within slightly more than a generation. Our sportspeople are also starting to shine on the toughest world stage at the Olympics, as our medal count, including the near misses, improves in recent times. This can only bode well for the future, provided we continue to work hard, expand economically, and have the resources to invest in our people and public infrastructure and services. What would you do if your national team lost a game? After attending the recent ASEAN Cup match at the National Stadium in Singapore with my boys, I witnessed something truly heartening from our supporters. Despite the loss, our fellow supporters continued to cheer as they exited the stadium. An unusual yet uplifting sight, especially in a culture where many might head straight for the carpark to avoid delays. The #relentless spirit of the fans reminded me of a few key lessons that resonate beyond sports: 1. Recover and refocus quickly: When setbacks occur, it is essential to bounce back and stay aligned with your original goals. Just as the supporters and the team remained #motivated to push for the semi-finals, we too must #persevere when faced with challenges. 2. Lean on your community: Achieving any goal takes a village. The #strength and #encouragement from families, friends, and communities are invaluable. Take time to acknowledge and appreciate their unwavering support. 3. Be #bold in action: In moments of defeat, retreating is the easiest option—but progress requires boldness. Taking #proactive steps in the face of adversity builds #resilience and strengthens resolve. Formula 1 in partnership with Singapore GP Pte Ltd & the Ultimate Fighting Championship have hosted world class events in Singapore. And it hosted Taylor Swift's Eras Tour as well. The city state has set aside S$165 million over the next 4 years to attract more world class events. Singapore is ranked as APAC's number 1 financial hub & number 3 in the world behind New York & London. According to the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment, Singapore, the economy has committed to reduce emissions to around 60 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2030. Looking at these facts, without a doubt Singapore does have the potential to host foreign/major sports events in the country. The Paris 2024 Olympics takes place from 26 July to 11 August 2024 in France, featuring 329 events in 32 sports. But what does this have to do with accreditation? Like any large-scale event, the Summer Olympics requires rigorous standards for quality assurance and compliance. Accreditation plays a crucial role in ensuring that everything from testing laboratories to sports equipment meets high standards. These include, but are not limited to: 1) Testing equipment - Equipment used in various sports must be tested and certified for accuracy and safety. Accreditation ensures that this equipment meets the necessary standards. 2) Athlete management - Laboratories that perform testing on athletes must be accredited to ensure their results are reliable and internationally recognised. This helps maintain the integrity of the competition and ensures a level playing field. 3) Event management - Accreditation also extends to the management of the event itself, including facilities and procedures, to ensure that they meet international standards for safety, security, and fairness.
