📊 **Survey Length and Respondent Engagement: Striking the Right Balance** 10 years ago, when I was a Director of Market Research, we conducted multiple waves of a study for an application for FDA approval. At the onset, we knew that the estimated time for diligently completing the survey was 40-50 minutes. But Due to FDA requirements and legal advice from our attorneys, we needed to include all the questions in a single survey. It fulfilled the FDA requirements so, I guess it served its purpose. But think about usefulness of the results...someone with the following self-reported profile completing the survey for a $25 honorarium (n = 3000): - Male - 25-34 - $100-150K (2013 $$) In your opinion, what percent of respondents completed the survey diligently? Even though the analysis irons out all the jagged edges, the analysis itself is flawed because of the underlying data. In market research, we often grapple with the dilemma of survey length. Recently, I came across a questionnaire with a question offering **82** options! There was no auto-completion or search feature enabled in that questionnaire. While comprehensive surveys can provide deep and broad insights, excessively long questionnaires risk respondent fatigue and disengagement. With attention spans shrinking, it's crucial to design surveys that are concise yet comprehensive. At Compeers AI, we facilitate survey design by taking such nuances into account. If you’re using an agency to collect survey data for you, know this: You are very likely to end up with synthetic data in your data set. Any survey that is incentivized, is now a target for bot-driven responses. AI can pass the “Turing test” with flying colors at this point. It’s getting much harder to distinguish between human, and AI generated survey responses. What can you do about it? 1/ Work with first party data whenever possible. You own the relationship with your customers, and can verify their data. 2/ Use vetting criteria for your market research agency. Ask what measures they have in place for preventing, or cleaning bot-driven data. While you’re at it, ask about their protocols using synthetic data. 3/ Stay on the pulse of bot trends These days, it’s normal that 30-50% of collected data contains bot activity that needs to be cleaned. Make sure your survey infrastructure is built with this in mind.
