FMEA is a formal, structured process for identifying and evaluating potential sources of risk in the design or manufacturing of a product. The focus of an FMEA is to identify the “potential failure modes”—how an item can fail—and provide a mechanism for mitigating these risks. Hence, failures are eliminated or reduced in descending order of severity, beginning with the most critical.
