On this day in 1824 – United States presidential election: No candidate received a majority of the total electoral college votes. Therefore the United States House of Representatives was charged with the decision based upon the Twelfth Amendment to the Constitution. It was a 4 way race between John Quincy Adams , Andrew Jackson, William H. Crawford, and Henry Clay. All 4 were Democratic-Republican. Two had the same running mate. Jackson had won the plurality of the popular and electoral vote, but through negotiations in the House, Adams easily won the presidency.
