Each state and territory in Australia operates under its own set of animal welfare laws, creating a fragmented regulatory environment that gives rise to disparities in the treatment of animals. These variations prevent the timely and consistent implementation of national standards based on contemporary animal welfare science and community expectations. It's time to create a unified national framework to establish consistent standards and simplify regulatory processes, ensuring uniform protection for all animals across Australia.
