https://lnkd.in/eqThhiib Why is Ghana's economy in shambles as we are a top gold producer in the world? The answer is clear- neocolonialism. Ghana government nor any individual has a gold mine. All the gold mines are owned by foreign companies who pretend to pay royalties to the government at a miserable 10% at most. The African governments must establish State Gold Mining Corp to take absolute control of our minerals and exploit them for our own development.

ZAMBIA'S GOLD RUSH CHAOS When the United Party for National Development (UPND) took office in August 2021, President Hakainde Hichilema made various commitments, one of which was to end illegal gold mining. However, the forthcoming MakanDay investigation reveals that the UPND-led government has allowed illegal activities to persist, despite its pre-election promise to reform the mining sector. MakanDay’s latest two-part report digs into Zambia's gold rush, focusing on Rufunsa district in Lusaka Province where Illegal artisanal miners dominate, extracting gold while facing exploitation from licensed companies like Gold Hunters. Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sustains millions worldwide; but its unregulated nature also fuels corruption, conflict, and organised crime. The World Gold Council’s ‘Silence is Golden’ report highlights recent findings that up to 80% of ASGM occurs in the shadow economy, leaving miners vulnerable to exploitation by criminal networks, armed groups, and corrupt officials. This is not purely a local or national issue for mineral-rich countries, but a geopolitical one: the Wagner Group has reportedly earned over $2.5 billion from ASGM since Feburary 2022. Through the UK–Ghana Gold Programme, TAG International is helping Ghana tackle illicit mining and smuggling by incorporating more gold traders into formalised supply chains, enhancing enforcement capacity, and promoting compliance with mining and trading regulation.
