Decommissioned Nuclear Plant Could Be First In US to Reopen
Michigan's 800 MW Palisades plant could be the first decommissioned nuclear plant in US history to be recommissioned and returned to service.
Nuclear reactor component maker Holtec, which specializes in decommissioning and nuclear waste management, bought the Palisades plant from Entergy shortly after it closed, with plans to mothball it, but has changed course and has ambitious plans to restart it by the end of 2025.
During its operational life, the plant had had a history of shutdowns due to equipment failures, broken fuel rod and guel spills. However, Michigan Governor Whitmer and a bipartisan coalition support the reopening with $150 MM of state funding, and the plant has received a $1.5 Bn conditional loan guarantee from the US DOE Loan Programs Office.
It would also be expected to qualify for investment and/or production tax credits, and incentives under the U.S. Civil Nuclear Credit Program.
