Are you trying to figure out if equity matters in your organization? Here's a very simple way to do it. Hopefully you know that you can look up the salary ranges of the top ten earners in any charitable organization. This is publicly available information. Take the top earner and figure out, are they earning more than three times what the average worker in your organization earns? If so, this doesn't necessarily mean the CEO is earning too much -- our usual default. It might mean the other staff are not earning enough. Here's a few examples. REMEMBER: Publicly available information... Food Banks Canada a $92 million organization Top ten earners: 4 earn between $80,000 to $119,999 4 earn between $120,000 to $159,999 2 earn between $ 160,000 to $199,999 Kids Help Phone a $ 43 million organization Top ten earners: 4 earn between $120,000 to $159,999 2 earn between $160,000 to $199,999 3 earn between $200,000 to $249,999 1 earns between $250,000 to $299,999 1 earns $350,000 and over Children's Aid Foundation Canada a $ 22 million organization Top ten earners: 4 earn between $80,000 to $119,999 2 earn between $120,000 to $159,999 2 earn between $160,000 to $199,999 1earns between$200,000 to $249,999 1 earns $350,000 and over FoodShare Toronto a $10 million organization Top ten earners: 5 earn between $40,000 to $79,999 5 earn between $80,000 to $119,999 This year at Peel Children's Aid Foundation all but one of our full time employees are new. As we hire, we do our level best to achieve equity by ensuring that the most senior folks in the organization are not earning more than three times the average salary of the rest of the team. We need to pay our people better across the board -- not just in the c-suite. That's a step towards greater equity. Do your homework. It's easy. Link below. https://lnkd.in/euWqPxu
Well said Maryann.
Human Centered HR ★ Belonging & Equity
1yGreat post! In the US, they're called 990's and every charitable organization should file them with the IRS to maintain their tax exempt status. You can often find them on the organizations website under their financials. What Peel Children's Aid is doing is very admirable (and rare) in terms of supporting equity with the no more than 3x model between the top and average worker.
