So Amazon now wants to do a Meesho, they are calling it Amazon Bazaar. Okay wait, hasn’t Flipkart been trying hard to create its own Meesho, it’s called Shopsy, which was launched 2 years ago. Meesho started its journey as a social-commerce platform in 2015 turned profitable in July’23. Meesho is now the fastest-growing e-commerce platform in India with around 120 million average monthly active users (MAUs). What Meesho did do differently was a sharp focus on Tier 2 and smaller cities. Also it’s average order value (AOV) is around ₹500. This was always a sort of a blue ocean considering the fact that Flipkart & Amazon with an AOV of approx ₹2,800 and ₹2,000 were playing a slightly different play in the e-commerce space. Truth be told digital commerce needs to address a few key consumer behaviours that have indicated that there’s a lot of value unlock possible in the space that Meesho operates. COD ORDER'S Amazon Flipkart Meesho Marketplaces today are highly buyer-oriented, as they should be, but there’s an ongoing challenge with COD (Cash on Delivery) orders that sellers consistently face. COD is essential in India, and it’s impractical to eliminate it entirely. However, marketplaces could adopt measures to make the process smoother and more cost-effective for sellers. One effective step could be to confirm COD orders via email or phone calls before dispatch, a practice already adopted by many D2C brands on their websites. This small step can drastically reduce shipping costs, minimize the hassle of unnecessary returns, and cut down on the wastage of resources associated with packing and shipping. Another solution might be to impose a limit on the COD order quantity or value, as mistaken bulk orders (e.g., 10 or 20 units instead of 1 or 2) lead to a high rate of returns and lost revenue for sellers. By implementing these measures, marketplaces can create a better balance, reducing returns on COD orders and building a more sustainable ecosystem for both buyers and sellers. What are your thoughts?
