Warehouses Are Sexy | The New Warehouse Podcast & Advisory Services

It's hard to let go. You invest your time into something and it doesn't become what you thought it would. That's a hard pillow to swallow in any case. When it comes to inventory it happens more times than you may think. Holding on to inventory that didn't sell as expected or just go the way your organization planned is a common problem. I've worked for organizations holding on to inventory with a layer of dust on top thinking that something will happen and it will become usable. Even with no movement in multiple years. Was money invested in the inventory? Yes, and that's part of the problem. Do we really want to admit the loss? However, as that inventory sits, the loss continues to grow. It's not "free" to have inventory just sit in a warehouse somewhere. Here is where you are losing: 1. You're paying for that space 2. You're paying for the labor to maintain the inventory (cycle counting, movement of product if needed, still showing up in your data) 3. It's taking up space where good inventory could be So if you have dead or excess inventory, is it really going to come back around again or are you just having trouble letting go? In the latest episode of The New Warehouse I spoke with Robert Iaria of B-Stock Solutions on how they help to find another life for this excess inventory. Take a listen at the link in the comments and leave your thoughts.

The costs aren't always apparent, as you say. I've lost count of the number of warehouses I've visited that had layers of dust on inventory that rarely, if ever, moved. Sometimes that inventory occupies prime space on pick lines... that means people have to move further to get what is needed and that hurts productivity.

Dusty inventory can pose serious risks over time, from decreased air quality affecting your team's health to potential damage to the goods themselves. It’s crucial to prioritize regular cleaning to maintain a safe and efficient workspace.

What ever you do, DO NOT start singing that Let It Go song… 🎵

That's a tough one, but you're speaking the truth Kevin. Holding onto dead inventory is like clinging to a sinking ship—sometimes you just have to jump off and swim. It's about cutting those losses and making room for new opportunities that actually move the needle.
