Let’s be clear: The Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025, an authoritarian playbook for a far-right presidential administration, will radically harm disabled people across the United States by removing basic civil rights protections and making it harder to access necessary resources and services. As the disability community continues to grow in the United States due to an aging population, long COVID, and other factors, it is critical to evaluate how the agenda will specifically impact disabled people, who make up at least 28.7 percent of the total population. Project 2025 will directly harm disabled people by: Eliminating the rights of and protections for disabled students Cutting key health coverage programs and services Creating even more barriers to employment for disabled workers Overhauling disability and other social benefits Reducing the ability to enforce the Americans with Disabilities Act

In the US, many people with disabilities face an unfair choice between saving for the future and maintaining essential benefits. CalABLE, led by our Steering Committee member Fiona Ma and the California State Treasurer's Office, is breaking this cycle and empowering individuals with disabilities to build a more secure future. The Council for Inclusive Capitalism looks at this transformative program and how it’s creating a more inclusive and resilient economy. I invite you to learn more about it: https://lnkd.in/ev4RfCFk

The work that Disability Leadership Institute member Simon Darcy is doing is at the forefront of change in #disability employment, including understanding the nature of self employment. Thanks for sharing these valuable case studies Simon. Disability #Leadership in action.

People with disability are 43% more likely to be self-employed or run their own business than the general public. Yet, mainstream business start-up programs rarely provide inclusions for people with disability running their own business or entrepreneurs with disability seeking inclusion in mainstream accelerator or incubator programs. Exceptions include SSI's #IgniteAbility that focuses on one-to-one start-up support for people with disability and Remarkable Tech that supports disability tech start-ups that may have founders with disability. While self-employment and entrepreneurial start-ups are important some people with disability, most still look for mainstream employment. However, the employment rates of people with disability have not changed for the last 20 years. Research on employees with disability has consistently found that this is often related to having a terrible time working for an employer. They may have trouble finding a job, or they may get a job but receive no support or development for their career and skills. Business has a key role in tackling this issue because we need large-scale employment to create significant change the Australian labour force participation statistics. For example, the NSW Government has announced that they aim to hire 10,000 more people with disability in the next three years. One of the most rewarding projects I've worked on is the IncludeAbility, which is led by the Australian Human Rights Commission. This project works with 17 of the biggest employers in the country. We’ve already seen some trial programs take place and groups of people being hired by companies like Woolworths, where they can rethink how people join, not only at the entry-level, but also higher up in the organisation. This is just one aspect of the work we’re doing at UTS Business School and as part of the UTS Disability Research Network. Work that has influenced the NDIS and NSW Inclusion Act, supported disability entrepreneurship in Australia or is fighting to make tourism across the country accessible to everyone. If you’re interested, you can explore some of our case studies on our website - https://lnkd.in/gYHuGt3Z Are you an employer looking to employ people with disability or a researcher in this area? I’d love to hear from you in the comments.

The project of democracy is figuring out how we live together in a way that promotes fairness, inclusivity, and equality. Each of us has a role in creating this cohesive, just, and flourishing society. In a time of competing visions for our country, my most recent Sojourners article compares Project 2025 to what I believe is a more hopeful alternative - that of the Beloved Community. As we advance equitable outcomes for all of Connecticut’s youth from cradle to career, we believe our children are our most vital investment. Environmental factors, systems, and structures influence a wide range of health, social and economic opportunities, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks along the path to emerging adulthood. Youth disconnection and disengagement are symptoms of disconnected systems and underscore the importance of understanding an individual and their behavior by considering the multiple environmental contexts in which that person lives, learns, and acts. Do you feel as strongly about this as we do? If so, make sure your voice is heard and share your testimony: https://loom.ly/d3fFWw8. #Youth #YoungPeople #YoungAdults

Photo borrowed from Helen Sanderson Associates Facebook page. Everyone in the photo is working hard as an individual and as part of a collective of leaders and changemakers who support organizational and systemic change to deliver #AuthenticInclusion for people with intellecdtual disabilities and all citizens, in partnership with advocates who identify as intellectually disabled and other marginalized and excluded groups, their families, their friends, their networks, and all of the assets that our communities can bring, both people power and structural power. Person-centred thinking and practices are at the heart of these efforts. Although it was perhaps thought inevitable (after the progress of the past 50 years) that policymakers in Ontario and elsewhere would continue to make signficant changes to support person-centred, community-based, assets-based outcomes, there are growing concerns about a change of direction towards marketplace systems that are detached from authentic inclusive values and outcomes. The time to stand up for authentic inclusion is NOW.

🌍 Continuing the Work of Justice and Equality As we approach the upcoming election, it’s vital to remember that our responsibility doesn’t end with casting our votes. Regardless of the outcome, we have essential work to do to create a country and a world that works for all of us. Since 2021, I have been sharing the 4 Disciplines of Ecologically Sound Social Justice, a curriculum designed to provide tools for becoming a cooperative component in the creation of systems that promote equality and justice. This program spans at least 12 months and offers practices that are crucial in the days to come. We must ask ourselves: Are we complacent when events unfold that don’t directly impact us? Are we silent in the face of daily injustices and inequalities? The power to move forward requires us to anchor ourselves in our values and act with integrity. As we embark on this journey, let us keep our goals at the forefront of our minds, hearts and actions, and remain disciplined in our pursuit of the world we envision. Collaboration and commitment are essential to co-creating the change we seek. I invite you to watch this brief overview of the curriculum linked below. Together, let’s engage in this vital work of transformation and support each other in our mission for justice and equity. https://lnkd.in/eUTpHJ5X #SocialJustice #Equality #Collaboration #Leadership #CivicEngagement #4Disciplines #Empowerment #Community

Milton Friedman's profound insight into societal structure reminds us that prioritizing freedom over equality can lead to a society that enjoys a high degree of both. It's a thought-provoking perspective on the balance between individual liberty and social equality. #MiltonFriedman #SocietalStructure
