Should we look down rather than up or besides us when pursing restoration initiatives? "The idea that one should focus more on exploring one aspect of the planet and ignore the others is a matter of perspective and depends on the goals plus priorities of individuals or societies." We can all agree restoration's main aim is to ensure a return of habitats, lands and species to an original, normal, or unimpaired condition regardless of the continent we get to execute on these initiatives. As we were pitching for funding of a program at Pause Conservations, we were asked; Why are you considering aquatic life? This planted seed needs water because.... 'In East Africa, more than 30 million people find a source of food, income and livelihood in fisheries and aquaculture.' Can finance be used to incentivize the management and protection of endangered species? Yes, it can! From plants, to frogs, insects, birds and mammals, South Africa is home to hundreds of species that are listed as Vulnerable, Endangered or Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Species on land alone. While only a fraction of these are nationally gazzetted with Biodiversity Management Plans, these policy tools are a key building block and opportunity for finance solutions to benefit biodiversity. Together with Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) Wilderness Foundation Africa and the Rhino Recovery Fund, we developed a tailor-made and niche tax incentive for OECMs* and Threatened Species in South Africa. Our CEO, Candice M.D. Stevens stated that: “Not only does this tax incentive provide a finance solution for conservation in South Africa, but it simultaneously creates a Candidate OECM, contributing to our national 30×30 goals.” With the right building blocks in place, anything is possible to design tailor-made finance solutions for biodiversity. Did you hear about South Africa's draft National Biodiversity Economy Strategy? The South African Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) published the draft National Biodiversity Economy Strategy on 8 March 2024 for public comments. The Strategy proposes four objectives: 1. Leverage biodiversity to enhance the ecotourism industry in sea and conservation lands. 2. Promote the use of game from wildlife systems to spur transformation and conservation-compatible land use. 3. Encourage consumptive use of marine and freshwater resources to foster socio-economic development. 4. Structure the bioprospecting, biotrade, and biodiversity-based production sector to benefit communities. AWEI submitted suggestions to bolster this strategy and ensure the focus is on conserving biodiversity while ensuring benefits for all South Africans from the sustainable use of wild species and their natural habitats.
