Combating Emissions with Innovation: How NAGEL’s integrated machinery rduces vehicle fine dust through advanced brake disc technologies What do a laser cladding system and a double-sided surface grinding machine have in common? “The manufacturer”. The #Euro7 emissions standard to protect the environment and health brings new technical challenges for vehicle manufacturers. In addition to many other parameters, the indispensable braking systems, which convert kinetic energy into heat via friction, have also come into focus. Powerful #brakesystems use #brakedisks for deceleration, on which a friction lining is pressed. The resulting fine abrasion amounts to over 30% of the total fine dust emissions of a vehicle. It therefore makes sense to significantly reduce wear on these components in future, while maintaining the same safety standards. In addition to #improved brake pads, the #solution includes coating the #frictionsurfaces of the brake discs with #hardmaterials in order to minimize the tendency to wear here too. Less wear, less fine dust. What sounds so simple is often not, and this is also true here. NAGEL - Honen & Superfinishen faced up to this task early on and once again successfully implemented the concept - everything from a single source. The main plant produces #lasercladding systems, #doublesided surface grinding machines and the #tools for them, because the solution to this task once again shows that the various process steps influence each other. The short decision-making processes at NAGEL have resulted in a competence center that is equipped with several state-of-the-art Nagel LCV 575 laser coating machines as well as #NaGrind 575 double-sided surface #grindingmachines. Over 10,000 brake discs of the highest quality have now been produced here. Positive test bench and real vehicle tests well below the targeted fine dust emission values and the resulting customer confidence led to the award of numerous complete systems. HybriTech® - New technology from a Polish brake pads manufacturer HybriTech® is a highly efficient technology of hybrid-based fitting of brake shoes in motor-cars, consisting in applying two different phases as part of a single fitting cycle: – phase 1, fitting at ambient temperature, – phase 2, hot fitting at the temperature of 200°C. Since this hybrid technology is a relatively new and unique solution, we had to modernise the composition of the friction material we have used so far and modify the technical parameters regarding preparing and forming of components, to implement it in our company. At the same time, it helped improve the durability, stability, and efficiency of the manufactured brake shoes. The key component of the HybriTech® technology is the use of a “pre-mix” based on elastomer adhesive, which plays a significant role in the pro-adhesive action between the matrix and fillers, by increasing resistance to motion in the friction pair. It results in reducing the so-called temperature fading so preserving the efficiency of braking under high temperatures. In addition, it improves the damping properties of the composite material, which has an impact on the hysteresis component of the friction force (reducing the squealing occurring during breaking). The additional advantage of the HybriTech® technology is a new way of transporting the raw material to the press hopper, which takes place via the Spyroflow system.
