The Impact of Skating Mechanics on Player Longevity In the fast-paced world of ice hockey, we often focus on explosive speed and agility, but one critical factor is frequently overlooked: skating mechanics. Proper skating form is more than just a technique for peak performance; it’s key to preserving a player’s body over the long term. Skaters with inefficient mechanics often overwork their muscles, leading to chronic injuries, joint stress, and decreased stamina—issues that shorten careers. What’s fascinating is how small adjustments in stride length, posture, or edgework can drastically improve efficiency and reduce the wear and tear on the body. Yet, it’s one of the least glamorous aspects of training. Could focusing more on skating mechanics unlock not only performance boosts but also longer, healthier careers for players? I think it’s time we take a deeper look at how our athletes move on the ice—and what we can do to ensure their longevity. I’m curious: How do you approach skating mechanics in your training or coaching? #HockeyTraining #SkatingEfficiency #InjuryPrevention #AthleteLongevity #IceHockey #PlayerDevelopment

🔍 Unveiling Common Mistakes in Figure Skating Jumps! 🔍 As a figure skating coach with years of experience, I've noticed some common pitfalls that skaters encounter when mastering jumps. Let's dive into a few key insights: 1️⃣ Lack of Rhythm: Many skaters struggle with maintaining the proper rhythm throughout their jumps. Timing is everything in figure skating; any deviation can throw off the entire jump sequence. 2️⃣ Improper Preparation: Proper preparation sets the foundation for a successful jump. Skaters often rush through the setup phase, neglecting to focus on speed, body position, and blade control. 3️⃣ Inconsistent Body Alignment: Achieving optimal body alignment is essential for generating a jump's necessary force and momentum. Misalignment can lead to instability and decreased jump height. By addressing these common mistakes head-on, skaters can elevate their performance and take their jumps to new heights! Remember, practice makes progress, and with dedication and proper guidance, any skater can overcome these challenges. #FigureSkating #SkatingCoach #JumpTechniques #SkatingTips #TrainingTips #SportsInsights #CoachingTips #AthleteDevelopment #SkatingCommunity #SkatingSkills #SkatingMistakes #PerformanceImprovement #SportsCoaching #FigureSkatingCoach #SportsAnalysis #SkatingSuccess #SportScience #AthleteTraining #SportsPerformance #SkatingChallenges #JumpMistakes #SkatingGoals #FigureSkatingInsights #SportsEducation #SkatingJumps #SportsTraining #SportsDevelopment

Why post on LinkedIn on a Saturday? Because I chose to do a challenge with my team to post on LinkedIn once a day every day for 30 days! Which means I already fumbled with missing yesterday’s post. But that’s ok! Because I get to share with you one of my favourite lessons from my favourite sport, Roller Derby. When folks start out with their roller derby career a lot of them come in with zero skating experience. There’s some people who come in with transferrable skills in ice skating or hockey, or perhaps roller blading, but a lot times it’s people like me who haven’t really skated much since the roller skating unit came through at the elementary PE class. And roller skating isn’t typically easy to pick up! You have wheels attached to your feet, you might land on your wrists, your tailbone or your head if you don’t know what you’re doing! That’s why the first lesson in roller derby is how to fall safely. The second lesson is how to stop safely. The third lesson? Get back up, and get back up as soon as you can. In a derby bout, the quicker you get up means more time to pass other players as a jammer, or get back to your teammates to help make way for your jammer to pass. A single round of a bout (a jam) is only a maximum of two minutes long, and could be cut short by the lead jammer. The time you take to get back up could be critical to the impact you have. So here I am, back in on the challenge even though I already missed a day. While it’s not the same as skating, I think it makes sense since it’s not something I’m used to doing. I definitely feel like I have 8 wheels strapped to my brain, but it will get easier the more I post, and it will get easier the more I jump back into it. Here’s a throwback photo from when I used to play!

The Ice Arena is a place for All! A quick look at some of the topics you'll learn about in KIN 104: -Basic skating skills. -How to fall safely. -Size inclusive advice for beginners. -How to distinguish normal adjustments to skating and "common but abnormal" situations including a variety of podiatric and joint issues (e.g. body awareness and self care). -Subdisciplines of figure skating (Skating Skills, Synchronized Skating, Ice Dancing, etc.). -Important historical figures of color including folks like Mabel Fairbanks, Surya Bonaly, and Starr Andrews. -Discussions of the evolution of figure skating rules and the impact of folks from a variety of backgrounds. -Opportunities for social connection! -Group performances to showcase your amazing new talents. -A wealth of resources about physical activity as a health behavior. -Chances to reflect on your growth as a learner in the context of the rest of your busy life.
Our preliminary results from the Ice Arena User Study are encouraging. Students overwhelmingly agreed that they feel a sense of belonging and connection at the University of Illinois Ice Arena. Even better, the Ice Arena is a place to reduce stress from academic life. Students love using the Open Skates the most, followed by KIN 104 Ice Skating Activities and recreational or club hockey. It is an honor to be a faculty member at College of Applied Health Sciences at Illinois and to support student sense of belonging while contributing to active lifestyle behaviors in KIN 104 Ice Skating Activities. It is a true joy to see students grow in confidence and find their own joy in learning. I encourage folks to check out the course for POT B Spring 2024 (registration is still open but sections are full or close to full). If you are unable to snag a spot for Spring POT B, make sure to keep it in mind for Fall 2024!

In hockey, speed is everything. That's why mastering skating is crucial to creating opportunities to make a pass, receive a pass, or take a shot. Skating isn't just a simple fix; it requires detailed instruction to produce the fine motor skills necessary for quick bursts of power, change of direction, and turn over rate. Focusing on skating alone increases efficiency, reduces injury risk, and allows you to stay strong on the puck/body. What do you think? Do you agree or disagree? Share your thoughts in the comments below. #agreeordisagree #techpowerskate #hockey #poweredbybauer #hockeyedging #quickfeet

### The 2002 Figure Skating Scandal: Ice Cold Controversy Hey everyone, Let’s take a spin through one of the biggest figure skating fiascos in Olympic history. The 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City had more drama than a soap opera, and here's the juicy scoop: 1. **The Main Event**: The pairs' figure skating competition was supposed to be a highlight. But instead of smooth glides and flawless routines, we got a mess. Russia snagged gold over Canada, even though many felt Canada had skated the better program. 2. **Judge, Judge, Who’s the Judge?**: The media wasn’t shy about calling foul. The spotlight hit French judge Marie-Reine Le Gougne. Rumor had it she was pressured into giving her vote to the Russians. 3. **Confessions and Backpedals**: When the Technical Committee's chair got in her face, Le Gougne reportedly confessed she'd been coerced. But then, she flipped and said she actually believed the Russians deserved to win. Confused yet? 4. **The Fallout**: No official probe into the scandal ever happened. But Le Gougne’s career took a nosedive. She was out of the judging game for good. 5. **The Bottom Line**: Salt Lake City’s games were full of drama, and the figure skating scandal left fans and athletes questioning the fairness of the competition. Stay tuned for more Olympic tales! #FigureSkatingScandal #SaltLakeCity2002 #OlympicDrama #IceSkating #GoldMedalFiasco #MarieReineLeGougne #JudgeGate #Olympics #SportsControversy #WinterGames

MISTAKES Learn from them, but don’t let them hold you back. Example, skating… (because NHL Stanley Cup finals is in action right now… Go Oilers… keep fighting) you can: - stop skating - add excessive padding to break your falls; or - get better at skating In business, often you’ll see new rules come out after things go wrong. seldom do you see new training come out after something goes wrong. Don’t waste time in finding ways to compensate instead, prevent repeat fails by spending time in becoming better. #failforward #continuousimprovement #businessfunding
