The Difference Between Good and Great Shipping Companies: It's All About the Seafarers What distinguishes a good shipping company from a great one? The answer lies in its seafarers. These maritime professionals are the frontline ambassadors who ensure company standards are maintained where it matters most - at sea. Today's maritime industry faces a critical challenge: an 8% shortage of qualified officers, a gap projected to widen in coming years. While European nations were historically the primary source of seafaring talent, that landscape has dramatically shifted. The torch has passed to developing countries, where above-average maritime wages attract qualified youth. However, as these nations progress economically and shore-based opportunities expand, seafaring's competitive edge faces new challenges. Many talented professionals are increasingly drawn to land-based roles that offer the simple yet precious privilege of having dinner with family rather than enduring months of separation. This evolving landscape makes seafarer engagement more crucial than ever for shipping companies' sustainable growth. At our organization, we've discovered that implementing robust systems of officer briefings, debriefings, and crew seminars yields exceptional results in strengthening company culture. Our crew forums provide invaluable opportunities to connect with seafarers, understand their perspectives, and align organizational goals and standards. The time has come for the maritime industry to elevate the status of seafaring and for companies to deepen their engagement with these essential professionals. After all, investing in seafarer satisfaction isn't just good practice – it's a strategic imperative.

It was our pleasure this week to facilitate the 'Exploring the DEI Imperative' workshop with The International Maritime Employers' Council Ltd (IMEC) Recruitment and Training Committee. We had some very rich discussions around the priorities and challenges of DEI with respect to seafarers, those we have now and those we need to attract to the industry, and considering what can be done by way of practical application that has long lasting impact. Across the work that we do, we are seeing ever increasing moves from intent to action, and from ad hoc initiatives to a strategic and joined up approach, not only to get ahead in the competition for talent of those who are already in it, but also to ensure this fascinating industry that we work in becomes equally as fascinating to those we need to attract. #maritime #inclusion #seafarers #warfortalent

HAPPY DAY OF THE SEAFARER ! Each year on June 25th, the world comes together to celebrate Day of the Seafarer, a day dedicated to recognizing the invaluable contributions of seafarers to international trade and the global economy. This annual event, established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2010, shines a spotlight on the men and women who navigate the world's oceans, ensuring the smooth and efficient transportation of goods and commodities. Seafarers are the backbone of the maritime industry, responsible for operating and maintaining the ships that carry approximately 90% of the world's trade. From essential goods like food and medical supplies to raw materials and consumer products, seafarers ensure these items reach their destinations safely and timely. Without their dedication and expertise, the global supply chain would grind to a halt, impacting economies and lives worldwide.
