SME Failure Rates and Market Access Challenges 🌍 In this insightful clip from the GIBS Business School (Gordon Institute of Business Science) hosted event wherein preliminary findings on the 'ESD Ecosystem Effectiveness in South Africa' research project were discussed, Prof. Kerrin Myres addresses a critical point: 👉While it's often said that SMEs in South Africa have a high failure rate, the reality is that the global benchmark shows about 75% of small businesses fail within the first three years. This early-stage failure is common worldwide. The real issue for South African SMEs, as Prof. Myres highlights, lies beyond this initial phase. The structure of our economy, heavily concentrated and dominated by corporates, makes it challenging for small businesses - even those with turnovers of R50 million—to penetrate many markets. 📌 Key Takeaway: Opening up supply chains to small businesses is essential for fostering SME growth and sustainability. 💥 This study on ESD Ecosystem Effectiveness in South Africa was initiated by Edge Growth and is being spearheaded by GIBS Business School.

Very valuable insight from Prof. Kerrin Myres on ESD Ecosystem Effectiveness in South Africa. It's refreshing to see our SME landscape being contextualised within global benchmarks. The revelation that early-stage failure rates in South Africa align with global norms is encouraging, suggesting the resilience and innovativeness of our entrepreneurs contrasted with global counterparts in navigating the critical first years. The real challenge - market access post-survival - presents an exciting opportunity for transformation. By recognising the structural barriers in our economy, solutions can be targeted. I view this as an invitation to collaborate more extensively across sectors, share best practices, and create pathways for SMEs to thrive beyond survival. The future of our economy depends on the success of our SMEs. #SouthAfricanSMEs #EconomicInclusion #EntrepreneurshipDevelopment #MarketAccess

Market Access Challenges and Big Corporates supporting B2B business is key for SMME. Ensuring adequate cash flow by paying SMME more frequently is also essential.
