#Somalia / #Ethiopia / #Somaliland - Somalia expels Ethiopian ambassador amid row over Somaliland port deal - from BBC News: Somalia has expelled the Ethiopian ambassador from the country and ordered the closure of two consulates. It accused Ethiopia of infringing on Somalia's "sovereignty and internal affairs". Somalia also recalled its ambassador from Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, for "comprehensive consultations." Ethiopia's foreign ministry spokesperson Nebiyu Tedla told Reuters news agency the government did not have information on the matter. The expulsion highlights an escalation in diplomatic tensions in the region following land-locked Ethiopia's port deal with the self-declared republic of Somaliland earlier this year. Its independence has not been internationally recognised and Somalia condemned the deal as an attack on its sovereignty. In January, Ethiopia signed a deal with Somaliland to lease a 20km (12 miles) strip of coastline, so it could build a navy base. The deal is not legally binding, though it is seen as a statement of intent and can lead to a treaty imposing obligations on those parties who have signed. In exchange, Ethiopia reportedly told Somaliland it would offer it possible recognition in the future - which angered Somalia. Somaliland seceded from Somalia more than 30 years ago, but is not recognised by the African Union (AU) or the UN as an independent state. Following this deal, Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud launched a diplomatic campaign and travelled to Eritrea and Egypt- two countries with fraught relations with Ethiopia. Somalia demanded a public reversal of the deal by Ethiopia but this has not happened. Somalia has described the deal as an act of aggression, adding that it was an "impediment to… peace and stability." Earlier this week Ethiopian delegates met officials from the semi-autonomous Somali province of Puntland, which has difficult relations with the central government. The Good, Bad, Ugly Of Nigeria’s Diplomatic Relations Under Tinubu- Daily Trust Newspaper While speaking with a national daily recently, Professor Damilola S. Olawuyi, SAN, FCIArb said, “There have indeed been positive signs of such increased global engagements, with Nigeria playing key roles in landmark international summits such as the United Nations General Assembly in New York and the COP-28 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). However, 2023 was generally a slow and underwhelming start in terms of a clear and discernible foreign policy agenda. Early blunders such as the outrage and backlash that trailed the rushed recall of Nigerian ambassadors were a preventable embarrassment for a country of Nigeria’s stature. There is, therefore, an urgent need to resolve the appointment of new and returning ambassadors as soon as possible, including Nigeria’s representation at UN bodies such as WTO, WIPO and UNESCO.” https://lnkd.in/dW9irApn

It is my perspective that Bangladesh does not believe that war is the solution, especially with Myanmar. Even when provoked, Bangladesh is handling the situation diplomatically, which is commendable. Despite provocation, from sheltering Rohingya refugees to engaging in dialogue with global powers, Bangladesh showcases its dedication to humanitarianism and regional stability. For the well-being of the people, the government should be applauded. Diplomacy over conflict is the strategy, and it’s the way forward. Read here: https://lnkd.in/g25ynWbM

Since the Arab Peace Initiative in 2002, 57 Muslim-Arab countries have regularly proposed peace and security to Israel. They proposed fully normalized diplomatic relations with Israel in exchange for: (a) complete withdrawal from the occupied Arab territories, including the Syrian Golan Heights, to the 4 June 1967 lines and the territories still occupied in southern Lebanon; (b) a just solution to the problem of Palestinian refugees, to be agreed upon in accordance with UN General Assembly Resolution No. 194; and (c) acceptance of the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state in the Palestinian territories occupied since 4 June 1967, including the West Bank and Gaza Strip, with East Jerusalem as its capital. This is exactly what the International Court declared in 2024: that the Palestinians have the right to an independent state within the entire occupied territories.
