The Dome, signified as the 'Vault in Heaven', is an instrument of transcendental symbolism. A humble seeker assimilates the vertical eminence as a channel and as a vessel that projects his/her invocation towards the heavens up above. In Islamic Architecture and Culture, the Dome is adapted in the Umayyad Period around 690 AD. As an influence from the Byzantine Architecture, where the dome was a key feature in Cathedrals, Basilicas and Churches. Domes and tent canopies were also associated with the heavens in Ancient Persia and the Hellenistic Roman world. A dome over a square base reflected the geometric extrapolation quality of those shapes. The circle represented perfection, eternity, and the heavens. Here, the dome of the bifurcated structure of the Bibi Jaiwaindi Tomb, in Uch Sharif, can be seen still standing strong and somewhat preserved after being subject to centuries of flooding, conflict and climate change. A rare capture, perched precariously on the edge of roof tops, amidst a fierce sandstorm roaring at the speed of 45 to 50 mph, in the Ancient City of Multan. A city considered to be at least five thousand years old with a tabulated history of approximately three thousand years. The old Walled City is built on land that is believed to have contained remnants of multiple prehistoric civilizations. Multan has had many names in the past; Kasyapapura, Hamsapura, Bagapura, Sambhapura and Mulasthana. The city is mentioned by its ancient names in the Mahabharata and Ramayana, proving its importance in medieval Indian civilizations. According to recorded chroniclers, the Arabs referred to Multan as Bait al-Zahab (House of Gold), as geographer Ibn Khurdadbih found immense reserves of gold in the area, which marked the city’s reputation and name. The Mughals called Multan, the Dar-ul-Aman (Arabic: House of Safety) further marking the historical value of the city. Multan is also considered to be the ‘original place’ of the sacred Hindu temple to Vishnu (sun-idol), and recorded as omphalos (Greek: naval) of the world by Greek historians. Here, we can see the Jain Swamber Temple, within Bohar Gate of the Old City. Its fascinating to see how a layer of tawny sepia brown sand is characterized within the texture of these ancient structures. Much of the construction of the Acropolis of Athens as we know it today began during the second half of the fifth century B.C. under the leadership of the statesman Pericles, as Athenians celebrated their victory over the Persians. The site chosen was a steep, rocky outcrop rising 511 feet above sea level in the basin of Athens; Acropolis, in Ancient Greek, is a portmanteau of the words akron (highest point) and polis (city). Inaccessibility, during those times of invasion, of war, was the very point. In 2021, a new elevator on the northwest side of the Acropolis was installed to take visitors to the top of the archaeological site. The elevator, which fits two wheelchair users and their companions, needs 32 seconds to travel from the base of the site to the top—ascending at 90-degree angle while offering panoramic views of the city. Once at the Acropolis, the elevators open onto a gray concrete path. This path upgrade, too, is relatively new, replacing a worn cobbled walkway from the 1970s. Its build respects the stones underneath: The cement was poured on a membrane layered over the stones, and can easily be removed. The path was also widened from 16 feet to 60. (Architect Manolis Korres, in charge of restoration works on the Acropolis, said this expansion more closely mimics the width of the path 25 centuries ago, when thousands would arrive at the site for major festivals.)

Interesting recent opinion piece from the Bangkok Post. Enhancing ancient ruins has become the regional standard. Conservation projects build up the sites and fill in the gaps, whether this involves stone, laterite, brick, plaster or wood. The most architecturally iconic elements are especially likely to be fixed up to look complete and intact. Sometimes, structures are reconstructed from scratch. Instead of ensuring historical accuracy, officials favour creating a visually impressive experience that they hope will bolster tourism and business. But this intervention deprives visitors of the opportunity to experience a true sense of the past. Instead of trying to captivate visitors with aesthetics, the focus should be on restoring a site carefully and accurately. #Angkor world heritage, best tourist destination #Cambodia #Tourism #Culture. Angkor is one of the most important archaeological sites in South-East Asia. Stretching over some 400 km2, including forested area, #AngkorArchaeological Park contains the magnificent remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century. They include the famous Temple of Angkor Wat and, at Angkor Thom, the Bayon Temple with its countless sculptural decorations. #UNESCO has set up a wide-ranging programme to safeguard this symbolic site and its surroundings. Angkor, in Cambodia’s northern province of Siem Reap, is one of the most important archaeological sites of Southeast Asia. It extends over approximately 400 square kilometres and consists of scores of temples, hydraulic structures (basins, dykes, reservoirs, canals) as well as communication routes. For several centuries Angkor, was the centre of the Khmer Kingdom. With impressive monuments, several different ancient urban plans and large water reservoirs, the site is a unique concentration of features testifying to an exceptional civilization. #Temples such as Angkor Wat, the Bayon, Preah Khan and Ta Prohm, exemplars of #Khmer architecture, are closely linked to their geographical context as well as being imbued with symbolic significance. The architecture and layout of the successive capitals bear witness to a high level of social order and ranking within the Khmer Empire. #Angkor is therefore a major site exemplifying cultural, religious and symbolic values, as well as containing high architectural, archaeological and artistic significance. The park is inhabited, and many villages, some of whom the ancestors are dating back to the Angkor period are scattered throughout the park. The population practices agriculture and more specifically rice cultivation. Criterion (i): The Angkor complex represents the entire range of Khmer art from the 9th to the 14th centuries, and includes a number of indisputable artistic masterpieces (e.g. Angkor Wat, the Bayon, Banteay Srei). Criterion (ii): The influence of Khmer art as developed at Angkor was a profound one over much of South-east Asia and played a fundamental role in its distinctive evolution. Criterion (iii): The Khmer Empire of the 9th-14th centuries encompassed much of South-east #Asia and played a formative role in the political and cultural development of the region. All that remains of that civilization is its rich heritage of cult structures in brick and stone. Criterion (iv): Khmer architecture evolved largely from that of the Indian sub-continent, from which it soon became clearly distinct as it developed its own special characteristics, some independently evolved and others acquired from neighboring cultural traditions.
