🏷️ Are you shunning or shopping the sales today? I spoke to the BBC about how Boxing Day has lost its shine. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still an important day on the retail calendar but so much spending has shifted online with deals starting as early as Christmas Eve! Also interesting how more and more shops are choosing to remain closed today (a pandemic silver lining?) Retailers would only ever shut stores if it made clear business sense. In this case, the benefits of rewarding staff far outweigh any in-store trading. It’s a tight labour market and retailers are competing for talent. In addition to significant uplifts in hourly pay, retailers are also sweetening the deal with things like flexible scheduling and additional benefits for frontline staff. Keeping stores closed on Boxing Day is just another way to show employees that they are valued. Also - promotion fatigue! When you consider that some Black Friday deals began on Halloween this year, which is the earliest I’ve ever seen, it’s no surprise that we’re all shopped out by Boxing Day. Shoppers will likely check out the deals online, but promotion fatigue will stop many from hitting the high street. What do you think? #retail #boxingday #ukretail #sales #consumer #highstreets

The slump in the number of people heading to the shops during Boxing Day sales signals a return to declining pre-pandemic levels, an analyst has said. Boxing Day shopper footfall was down 7.6 per cent from last year across all UK retail destinations up until 8pm, MRI Software’s OnLocation Footfall Index found. However, this year’s data had been compared with an unusual spike in footfall as 2023 was the first “proper Christmas” period without COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, an analyst at the retail technology company said. It found £4.6bn will be spent overall on the festive sales. Read the full story here 👇 https://lnkd.in/eg-Wdg23

Is the Boxing Day shopping frenzy going out of style? After the whirlwind of Christmas, is rushing to the Boxing Day sales still worth it? 🛍️ I’ve been fortunate the last few years to enjoy some time off over the holidays, and it’s great to see John Lewis & Partners and Waitrose & Partners giving their teams the same by closing over 300 shops this year. With stores like M&S and Next already making this move, it feels like retail is stepping back from the post-Christmas rush. Besides, why go out when you can shop the sales from the comfort of your home? 📲 As consumer habits continue to shift online, maybe it’s time more brands prioritised rest over retail… What do you think - should all shops close on Boxing Day? https://lnkd.in/eWDb9aNF

The rise of #BLACKFRIDAY... In Australia, Boxing Day has traditionally been the biggest day of sales in the retail calendar. However through the distribution of the internet and the growth of social media, the global barriers have been reduced and Boxing Day has slowly lost it's prominence. A concept that originated in the hub of commerce and capitalism, the USA has overtaken Boxing Day. Black Friday, day of shopping traditionally undertaken after Thanksgiving has expanded across the waters and exploded into what is regarded as a month long retail peak spanning across November. Curious, I entered the elementary comparison into google trends and saw that since 2018 Black Friday has far exceeded Boxing Day in terms of search volume. While not a perfect science, it shows the growing trend of Black Friday in the Australian Retail and Ecommerce Scene. Have you shopped Black Friday yet? #Retail #BoxingDay #Trends #Ecommerce #Trade
