I’m thrilled to share my latest publication, “Publicly Available AI Access and Integration in African Higher Education: Usage, Impact, and Barriers in the Continent’s Largest Regional Economies,” now available on ResearchGate! DOI: 10.13140/RG.2.2.18593.21601 Our study, commissioned by the Development Bank of Southern Africa, explores the transformative potential of AI in higher education across South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, and Ethiopia. We analyzed survey data from nearly 3,000 students, uncovering: 🔹 High demand for AI in education, particularly to enhance productivity and job readiness. 🔹 Key barriers, including subscription costs and limited internet access, which hinder equitable access. 🔹 A strong push from students for integrating AI into curricula, signaling a readiness for digital transformation. These insights are essential for policymakers, educators, and tech innovators aiming to foster an inclusive, digitally skilled future across Africa. Whereas it is a vision to many, especially in low income countries in the world, to some, the use of Artificial intelligence(AI) is a reality. The future of work, according to research, will immensely rely on how the workforce leverages, uptakes and paces #artificial_intelligence in decision making in a rapidly digitizing world. This takes one to understand that we are in the fourth industrial revolution where ICT is the cornerstone for growth and development and, thus, prepare for future technological advancement and stay afloat in the job market. Statistics can suffice to paint a picture of the need for Artificial intelligence: 76% of employees currently want to perform their jobs better and faster. 47% want to keep up with new technology. With 52% of companies not leveraging data analytics and 69% lacking a data-driven culture. Thank you Otic Foundation for the #Free_AI_In_Every_City_classes for equipping us with the practical skills that I believe are going to change the work landscape in Uganda. Taking part was a previlage and rewarding. Teach For Uganda deserves a mention because it wouldn't have been possible without the life changing opportunity I was given.

“Africa Will Do It Anyway” In his powerful speech, Tonee Ndungu highlights a critical truth: Africa will adopt and shape AI on its own terms. With the continent boasting the world’s youngest population, 60% of whom are under 25, the trajectory for AI use and innovation in Africa is inevitable. As AI becomes a driving force in the global economy, Africa’s youth are uniquely positioned to harness its potential. Already, countries like South Africa, Morocco, and Kenya are embracing AI tools, with a growing number of industries integrating AI to solve local challenges. From revolutionizing education with AI chatbots to empowering agriculture through real-time data insights, Africa is not just a consumer of AI but a growing innovator in the field. While challenges like digital infrastructure and data accessibility remain, the continent is steadily overcoming these barriers. Africa’s young entrepreneurs and developers are creating solutions that leverage AI for good, focusing on local contexts such as healthcare, financial inclusion, and language preservation. As Tonee said, “Africa will do it anyway.” The next wave of AI advancements will likely be fueled by the creativity, resilience, and ingenuity of Africa’s young minds, shaping a future that is distinctly African. I am thrilled to share that we have now successfully authored a white paper titled "AI and the Future of Work in Africa," as a result of the intensive workshop. My participation brought insight from the legal perspective as the regulatory framework around AI will inevitably shape the way we create and interact with AI. This collaborative effort brought together thought-leaders from Oxford University, Microsoft Research, Microsoft Philanthropies, the University of Pretoria, NEPAD, and Lelapa AI. 📘 Highlights of the White Paper: 1. 🌍 The future of AI in Africa is brighter than ever! Here's an initiative that's not just groundbreaking, but also deeply inspirational. This summer, the second cohort of the "African Women in Tech and AI" programme will converge at the International Artificial Intelligence Center of Morocco, "Ai Movement," in Rabat. Scheduled from July 1 to 13, 2024, this in-person summer camp will bring together nearly 80 women scientists from 28 African countries. The training will cover strategic foresight applied to AI, AI project management, leadership, and development of start-up projects. Following an intensive six-week online training in the spring of 2024 — focusing on data science, programming languages, and AI ethics — participants will present their entrepreneurial projects to a panel of esteemed professionals from Ai Movement, the OCP Foundation, and UNESCO. 🌟 Approximately 15 projects will be selected for incubation and financial support from the OCP Foundation. 🚀 Reflecting back, I recall leading a similar initiative in Ghana where we witnessed the power of strategic foresight in transforming raw talent into sophisticated AI artisans. It's about cultivating skills that harmonize innovation with ethical frameworks and practical applications.
