Facilitating the vertical movement (infiltration) of water, using implements like the Cursebuster, has (anecdotally) shown to help mitigate excessive wetness in closed depressions, which tend to be extremely high risk of flood stress. Garden Preparation - No Soil Disturbed It's that time of year when we Michiganders start getting our garden beds ready. And I'm no exception. But I think my methods are not thesame as my neighbor's. In my Permaculture ecosystem everything has a part to play, including weeds. In fact, weeds are often an ally in soil protection. My favorite cover crop costs me nothing, it's creeping charlie (Glechoma hederacea). I know most people spend inordinate amounts of time trying to keep this plant out of their lawn or garden. Why? It has a shallow root system that doesn't compete with the deeper roots of most garden vegetables and shades the soil from the glaring sun.
