On June 19, 1865, the last enslaved people in Texas finally learned that they were free — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. This day became known as Juneteenth, an annual commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. While Juneteenth marks an important milestone in American history, it also serves as a solemn reminder that the journey towards true equality for Black Americans has been long and arduous. Even after emancipation, systemic racism and injustice have persisted in many forms. As we celebrate the joy of freedom on Juneteenth, we must also reflect on the work that still needs to be done to dismantle the legacy of slavery and achieve racial equity. Join us in honoring #Juneteenth by learning about its history, supporting Black-owned businesses, and getting involved with organizations working for racial justice and civil rights. Together, we can build a better future rooted in equality, understanding and mutual respect.
