CAN ART SURVIVE THE COST OF LIVING CRISIS AND UPLIFT COMMUNITIES? The arts sector is suffering from rising living costs, which impose significant financial pressure on artists and organisations. As materials, production, and daily living expenses increase, many creatives find themselves at a crossroads. However, these challenges also offer a chance to rethink how art can meaningfully connect with and support communities. In response, artists and arts organisations adapt and innovate, exploring new ways to engage with audiences while prioritising community well-being. This situation underscores the vital role of art in fostering connection, expression, and resilience during tough times, enabling artists to sustain their work while promoting a sense of belonging and support within their communities. Dr Tully Barnett, Associate Professor of Creative Arts at Flinders University, joined us today to discuss how the cost-of-living crisis is hitting the arts and how we can shift the focus to art’s role in building stronger, more resilient communities.

The wrap reel for The Good Lab by Micro Galleries has just been released. This program was powerful because artists do something kinda cool: authentically collaborate with skill. Artist collaboration employs a unique methodology that integrates research, diverse practices and approaches, creation, tension, failure, reimaginings, and solutions to address complex issues. Repeat. According to the Brookings Institution, such collaborative community engagement is crucial for effective problem-solving and sustainable development. Through this collaborative process, artists are inspired to create innovative works that reflect and tackle these issues. Plenty of research shows it, our work does it. https://lnkd.in/gZUc-qu5 Embracing the potential for failure, The Good Lab encourages experimentation and iterative design, viewing setbacks as opportunities for learning and growth. This iterative process of trial and error ultimately leads to more robust and creative solutions, resulting in impactful art that resonates with both the local community and a global audience. https://lnkd.in/g2h-D3MK

" A certain age " In the realm of art and innovation, 'a certain age' translates to a unique blend of experience, wisdom, and an ever-evolving creative vision. Age, in this sense, is not a limitation but a testament to the journey of growth and discovery that enriches our creative pursuits. Luchita Hurtado, until her passing at 100, reminded us that our creative spark knows no expiration. Her first museum retrospective, held at the Serpentine Gallery in London when she was 98, is a powerful reminder that our potential to inspire and innovate doesn't wane—it transforms. This brings to light an important conversation about how we, as professionals and creatives, value and integrate the vast experiences that 'a certain age' brings into the contemporary narrative. How do you see age and experience shaping creativity in your field? Let's share and celebrate the diverse journeys that enrich our professional and artistic landscapes. #CreativityAcrossAges #ExperienceMatters #Innovation

Calling all Toronto-based arts orgs - we need your help! Founded in 2022, the Community and Cultural Spaces Trust (CCST) is a trust dedicated to the long-term preservation and creation of affordable spaces for arts, culture, and community activities in Ward 9, Davenport, Toronto. Our goal is to mitigate the current displacement of arts and community organizations from Davenport and Toronto more broadly. This year, we are launching a survey to deepen our knowledge of the space challenges and needs that organizations in Ward 9 face. The survey questions are focused on how your organization(s) has operated in your spaces, any space needs your organizations may have, and your outlook on CCST’s role in providing support. We hope that by completing the survey to the best of your ability, you will help us build long-term plans for community cultural space preservation. Fill in the survey now: https://lnkd.in/enCgeHuG We estimate that this survey will take between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the level of detail you choose in the open-ended questions. While the survey will remain open beyond this date, we would appreciate it if you could fill out this survey if possible by February 1, 2025.

In the arts, engagement is everything. Whether through a live performance, a museum exhibit, or a public mural, the true magic of art happens when it resonates with people—sparking emotion, conversation, and sometimes, transformation. But engagement isn’t just about creating art. It’s about building connections: between artists and audiences, between communities and culture. In a time when distractions are endless, engaging with the arts reminds us of our shared humanity and fosters a sense of belonging. For arts organizations, finding new ways to engage—whether through digital platforms, interactive experiences, or community outreach—is key to ensuring the arts remain relevant and accessible to all. Let’s continue to explore, innovate, and create moments that inspire meaningful connection. #ArtsEngagement #CulturalConnection #CommunityThroughArt #CreativeOutreach #ArtForAll
