In a time of geopolitical tensions, it was encouraging to convene the 6th Vice-Presidents of Research Meeting of APRU at the University of Science and Technology of China, one of the preeminent institutions for fundamental research on the globe, to discuss challenges to international research collaboration and how the Association of Pacific Rim Universities can help to overcome them. To the participants from 21 member universities and 12 member economies, I emphasized, with reference to the title of our upcoming annual report, “Place and Promise: Partnering for the Pacific”: “We recognize the distinct promise that any place across the Asia Pacific holds for its own future, in terms of local identity, resources, and development. The University of Science and Technology of China is precisely a paragon of the promise that a place holds. As a consortium spanning the entire Pacific Ocean, it is APRU’s objective to partner with its diverse member institutions and other stakeholders, to explore, as the theme of this meeting emphasizes, Collaborative Research for A Better Future.”

Dear network, I am proud to share my third-year thesis, completed under the supervision of Dario Batistella, for which I received a grade of 18/20. This project, the result of countless hours of hard work and dedication, marks the culmination of my undergraduate studies at . Entitled "The Snow Dragon Tale: China’s Securitization of the Arctic as a Tool for Influence," this research examines China's security strategy in the Arctic through the lens of the "securitization" theory from International Relations. This approach reveals China's sophisticated narrative construction, blending traditional values with modern imperatives to position itself as a major polar power. Key points: - China's strategic re-securitization of the Arctic, capitalizing on the vacuum left after the Cold War. - China's pursuit of an Arctic identity, illustrated by initiatives such as the Polar Silk Road and its observer status in the Arctic Council. - The broader implications of China's Arctic strategy on global governance and international power dynamics. This thesis highlights the connections between identity, security, and power, emphasizing the critical importance of the Arctic in 21st-century International Relations. I hope that this thesis can someday modestly contribute to expanding democratic-centric literature by applying securitization theory in an authoritarian context, or by challenging Western neo-realist scholarship with a constructivist perspective on PRC strategies. I am deeply grateful for the support I received throughout this journey and excited about the opportunities this research will open up! I hope those interested will enjoy reading it.
