Last week, our team got the chance to attend Gateley's latest leadership event, where two incredible leaders from business and sport shared their insights: John Steele OBE, former England rugby player and Chair of Commonwealth Games England, and Steve Hewitt, former CEO of Gymshark. 👥 Here are some standout takeaways that really stuck with us: ✨ Humility in leadership Great leaders don’t forget where they started, embracing the challenges and lessons that shaped them. 🌿 Wisdom from a Māori proverb John Steele shared a New Zealand saying: Kia whakatōmuri te haere whakamua, which means, "I walk backwards into the future with my eyes fixed on my past." A reminder of how much we learn from looking back, even as we move forward. 💡 Values-based leadership It’s not just about having values; it’s about living them. Purpose and authenticity are key to navigating leadership and driving success. As the saying goes: “If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything.” It was a brilliant event that gave us plenty of food for thought! #Leadership #Business #Sport

Success is a journey that often comes with its fair share of setbacks. It takes time, resilience, and an unwavering belief in your goals. Brisbane Lions coach Chris Fagan has understood this better than anyone. He’s not just a coach to his players; he’s a leader who genuinely cares for every individual in the Brisbane Lions family. From the assistant coaches to the physios, corporate team, and even the marketing coordinator, Fagan ensures that everyone’s efforts are aligned with the team’s goals. When I worked at the Lions, Fages would regularly check in on our communications team to make sure our off-field objectives were perfectly in sync with what was happening in the football department. He’s a man who cares deeply about the success of the whole organization, not just the game. It’s this attention to detail, and his belief in the people around him, that makes him a truly remarkable leader. Success may take time, and there may be bumps along the way, but with leaders like Chris Fagan, who understand the value of every team member, both on and off the field, greatness is always within reach. #Leadership #Teamwork #Success #BrisbaneLions

What makes this franchise so successful? If you ask any player they attribute their success to LEADERSHIP! Players are oftentimes quoted speaking highly of Andy Reid’s leadership. It’s said that he sets expectations, builds relationships which fosters trust, he creates growth plans for all of the players and he allows them to be themselves. He gives them autonomy to play their game how they want to play it with his oversight and structure. What does that sound like? 🤔 Offering B.A.N.G. with their buck!!!!!! This is what some would refer to as a Dynasty organization. That’s like the Black card of American Express, unlimited potential…… How are you creating a Dynasty culture within your Leadership? Let’s talk about how I can help. Schedule a call!

Happy Friday! Every so often, you hear a quote that resonates deeply, sticking with you in a way it hasn't before. Travis Green, the new head coach for the Ottawa Senators Hockey Club, said, "It's one thing to be a talented group, and it's another to be a talented #team with a winning mindset that wants to grow; my role as a #coach is to evolve Ottawa's culture to the latter." This made me think about the differentiation between #results and #talent. Despite having some of the most talented rosters in the National Hockey League (NHL), teams like the Ottawa Senators and the Toronto Maple Leafs haven't fostered an authentic winning culture. Talent alone isn't enough. #Leaders must nurture both talent and drive to foster a winning mindset. Spencer Stuart has shown that companies with both highly talented and driven teams are six times more likely to outperform others. How driven is your team? And how are you nurturing that drive? Dive deeper into this topic into today's #FridayLeadershipReport and cultivating a winning culture. Ready to transform your team? Discover how our leadership development programs can help you achieve the perfect balance of talent and drive by connecting with Matt Goff to start the conversation. Along the road with you... Alan

This week, we're kicking off the year 2025 with our annual Executive Leadership Forum at DHL Group, welcoming our global executive community to this virtual event. In this context, I had the opportunity of talking to Dan Abrahams, a renowned Sport and Performance Psychologist with 28 years of experience in high performance sports. Dan works across multiple sports such as Aston Martin Formula One Premier League and Championship clubs in England and has held senior psychology positions for England Golf and England Rugby. During the Executive Leadership Forum, we will explore one element of our leadership framework together with Dan, “having the will to win”. We chose to invite him to the Forum and to have him talk about his profound understanding of what sets high performers apart and the principles they follow. My first question to Dan: Is the “Will to Win” a skill or an attitude? #Leadership #HighPerformance #WillToWin #DHLGroup

During a live Ask-Me-Anything session, as part of the latest edition of our Crusaders Leadership Programme™, Robbie Deans shared a fresh leadership lesson… Robbie has coached some total rugby legends; people like Richie McCaw, Dan Carter and Kieran Read. Robbie’s job, especially early in a player’s career, is to show he believes in them — often even more than they believe in themselves. “We can often see that guys have the capacity to push on. But they don't necessarily see it themselves because they're going into a level they've never played at before. Talk about the things that you want. Talk about the things they're capable of. And leave some space for them to surprise you… because they do.” When it comes to selection, leaving space for people to surprise you means Robbie’s always looking for multiple perspectives. That way no one gets pigeonholed by one person’s perspective. Try this yourself: 🤔 Choose one of the people you lead, what have you discussed with them about where they could go? 🚀Is there an opportunity for you to raise your aspiration for that person? How so? Let us know how you get on in the comments.
