𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 “𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴” 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿 — Depending on the context, your investors can help you in many ways with introductions, resources, industry expertise, and strategic advice. Think early about what you want from an investor. 𝟮. 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 — Even if you’re not fundraising or if they passed in previous rounds, update them every quarter or so (email is fine, a quick call is better) about your progress. They will get to know you, and you will understand their perspective better too. 𝟯. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 — Are you going to be happy with a medium-sized exit after a few years? Or are you aiming for an IPO? Markets stay irrational longer than you stay solvent. Why? The market will keep its reputation, but the founder won’t. Jason Shuman, GP at Primary Venture Partners ($1B in AUM), prioritizes investing on founders with industry experience rather than product-market fit. He recommends reaching out to at least 3 industry experts a week. By simply doing this, a startup saves months of making generic mistakes, and staying ahead of the curve. Time equals money, and founders need to balance both.
