Excited to share a work of mine, OpenRMF clone using Bevy with Zenoh. 🐦⬛Bevy is an Entity Component System game engine built on Rust. It provides a fast, easy, and efficient way to perform parallel threaded applications and allow sharing and searching of resources within the world. 📡 Zenoh is a pub/sub/store/query protocol written in Rust, and is promoted to have low latency over other protocols. Moving towards the next generation of robotics middleware, I want to find out first hand how is it like to implemented a OpenRMF clone with Bevy. I want to retain some of OpenRMF’s amazing features, like tagging events to trigger infrastructure such as doors and lifts, and explore to enhance other features such as the path planning algorithm. This is what I have achieved so far: ✅ Implemented Zenoh as the communication protocol with Bevy Apps as clients and with various Zenoh routers running ✅ Created a fleet adapter with a grid based path finding algorithm that generates path dynamically on run time ✅ Created a simple door adapter that receives command from fleet adapter and relay to the door controller ✅ Created proxy door controllers and fleet managers that behaves like real system at the basic level (fleet managers and robots have a basic navigation stack that can navigate around objects) ✅ Created a visualisation app that subscribes to all the states and building message and creating a virtual twin ( pure representation with no logic) ✅ Created a developer UI that allow sending of tasks at different levels (send task to RMF core, send task to fleet adapter or fleet manager directly, and operating doors at adapter and controller level) More work needs to be done, like improving the path planning algorithm to make sure the robot stands clear of the door, and better navigation stack of the robot to improve navigating around objects. I have definitely learned a lot on this project, like topics on asynchronous functions and implementing them on Bevy, and architecting the framework that I envisioned a robotics middleware framework should be. I will be trying to implement this on actual hardware and really experience how Zenoh and Bevy performs in deployment and continue to improve these packages.
