It's hard finding work that you can share when working in creative / technical fields. Everything I did at Calvary Robotics was for the apps department and is still proprietary. While there I transitioned from SoildWorks 3D modeling software to 3D Studio Max which was about as large a jump as someone who works in 3D can be expected to make.
SolidWorks is all about precision and numerical accuracy. 3D Studio Max is about making things look really good really fast. With the help of Christopher Grieve and Karie Carita, I was up and running in about a month, starting with zero knowledge of the software. It took a lot of me banging my head against the desk trying to unlearn approaches to modeling and grasp another 'legacy user interface' that, like SolidWorks, consists of decades of tools being added on top of existing ones, creating a chaotic mess of buttons, drop-down menus, and options.
Creating stunning, photo-realistic animations is the real strength of 3D Studio Max, and while it can take multiple days of render time on a fairly robust server farm, the results speak for themselves. The video below is a project my supervisor, Christopher Grieve, made a year or two ago of a fully enclosed automation cell for handling stereolithography parts from a bank of high end Stratasys resin 3D printers.
This is the sort of work I was just beginning to get good at creating, although given that he has decades more experience than me, the sort of perfection was something I could only ever aspire to.
Today I learned how to how to use photos to quickly create realistic robot models In CAD. The main challenge was finding the right photo of existing robots that have a frontal and side view to begin the modelling. For what I did I selected a security robot I found.

Once I got the right position in freeCAD it came down to drawing out a crude sketch and then padding it out as appropriate. Initially I thought of tracing out the whole model but decided it's better to include the main body and sensor attachments separately so that it's better organised that way.
Including extra wheels and adjusting the size was a bit of a challenge. As I reused an example robot in freeCAD it streamlined progress so the challenge had more to do with repositioning, resizing and adding in new links and joints for the new parts while removing the old example robot model.
With that done now's the next challenging bit. Configuring it's controls for movement.

Demo of Cadmium from the recent LLM Hack by Entrepreneur First x Mistral AI x Hugging Face
Cadmium creates 3D CAD models using just human language. Specify the requirements and let the agents do the rest for you. After each step, you can iteratively improve the design, add new components, and change parameters. Zero 3D design software experience needed.
This is something I always wanted to exist for robotics. If you know someone who can benefit from this, let's chat.

So, last week, Kingsley Kwesi Mensah took 'uNhlanzeko' to an open area for a spin... Just kidding! 😅
This is actually a rendering in computer-aided design. 📐
What you're seeing here is a sneak peek of #uNhlanzeko. In June and July. he'll be machining and #3Dprinting parts, assembling them, and conducting tests at Algorhythm Living Lab to gather valuable insights for her development.
Stay tuned for more updates as we bring uNhlanzeko to life! Enjoy these renderings for now and get ready to witness the exciting journey ahead. 💡🔧 #Innovation#Robotics#Prototyping#TechDevelopment

🎉 Introducing Our Automated Veneer Patching System (AVPS)! 🤖✨
After months of hard work, long nights, and countless challenges, my team and I are thrilled to share the result of our Semester 5 Final Project: the AVPS, a robot designed to revolutionize the veneer patching process.
🔍 What makes AVPS special?
> 💡 Smart Defect Detection: Using the powerful YOLOv8 model, AVPS can automatically detect defects in veneer sheets with precision and speed, eliminating the need for manual inspection.
>🔧 Precise Motion Control: By leveraging Simulink-based control systems and efficient kinematics, AVPS ensures smooth and accurate movements during operation.
> 🛠️ Custom Design: From 3D design to custom rotary encoders and lead screws, every component was built with reliability and performance in mind.
> 💾 Integration of Machine Learning & Robotics: Our system combines YOLOv8 for defect detection with custom ROS nodes for communication, trajectory planning, and actuator control.
>🌟 The Impact: Our project aims to reduce manual labor and time in veneer patching, making the process faster, safer, and more cost-effective. While there’s still room to grow, especially in handling lighting variations and implementing defect repair, we’re proud of what we’ve accomplished so far.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
🛠️ The Journey: This project wasn’t just about technical challenges; it was about teamwork, perseverance, and growth. From debugging endless ROS nodes to recalibrating encoders late into the night, we faced numerous obstacles. There were moments of frustration, but also moments of triumph when everything finally worked. 💪
A special shoutout to my amazing team:
