Some🎄'Yule' tide cheer 🙌 to end the year: The Pilbara Leaf-nosed Bat (Rhinonicteris aurantia [Pilbara Form]) is listed as Vulnerable under the EPBC Act and BC Act, and can only be found in the Pilbara and upper Gascoyne regions of Western Australia. The unique bat species is an obligate cave roosting bat and is heavily reliant on warm (28 to 32°C), humid (~85 to 100%) environments for roosting (Armstrong 2001, Bullen and Reiffer 2020). Sadly, its distribution is limited because deep, complex caves and abandoned mines with the right conditions are rare in the area. In July this year Robert Hemsworth and I had the opportunity to work with Fortescue and Kariyarra Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC Traditional Owners on Kariyarra country searching for an elusive Pilbara Leaf-nosed Bat (PLNB) Roost… a permanent diurnal roost , its location inferred to be near the Yule River. It’s a needle in a haystack type of hunt, but we were hopeful we could narrow down the search area. Our first look at the area, didn’t look promising, caves were few and far between, but we were going to give it our best. As luck would have it, on the second last day of the survey, Rob (on his way to another potential cave) spotted a small opening that looked promising. We placed our last echolocation recorder there to be picked up the next morning before we headed back to Perth. Well, in that one night over 4,500 PLNB calls were recorded. We returned with Kyle Armstrong a few weeks later to record and confirm additional information on the cave/roost. Information to date supports the categorisation of this cave as a PLNB Permanent Diurnal Roost🦇 (now referred to as the ‘Wamerina Roost’), with occupancy and call data continuing to be collected. It has been exciting to find a significant diurnal roost and add to the species area of occupancy with the potential to uncover more connectivity and dispersal between other roosts in the region. On Tuesday, I had the opportunity to learn about Buchart Horn Inc.’s Codorus Beautification Project in York, Pa. The goal of this project is to make the Codorus more appealing to the public by increasing green space and recreation opportunities. Buchart Horn wants to add vegetation along the channel along with side walks for public use. By giving people greater access to the water, Buchart Horn and the York County Economic Alliance hope to connect the community. This is a project that will be completed in multiple phases and will cost over $100 million to complete. One of our stops along the Codorus was the Richland Avenue Dam (pictured below). These dams are dangerous as the boil can trap debris and wildlife in it. This is also dangerous to people and could cause drowning if someone were to get caught in it as the boil pulls objects back towards to the dam and under the water. Part of phase one of this project is to remove this dam because it is dangerous, hindering public use, and to allow migratory fish back into this area. This is similar to the Bascule Gate Dam that was already removed for the same purposes. Removal of these dams affects the flow of the creek, making it less turbulent in these areas than it was when the dams were in place. This can be related to a hydraulic jump, which is what we are currently learning about in class. The boil is a submerged hydraulic jump, taking the flow from supercritical to subcritical. This creates a very turbulent flow that allows for mixing and aeration.

"Trees for Tribs is a statewide effort to reforest New York's tributaries - small creeks and streams that flow into larger rivers and lakes - by planting trees and shrubs along these waterways. The goal is to create or improve riparian (streamside) buffers to decrease erosion, reduce flooding damage, improve wildlife and stream habitat, and protect water quality." "Buffer in a Bag Program Through Buffer in a Bag, organizations and private landowners can apply to receive a bag of free tree and shrub seedlings to help establish or improve a stream buffer. Each bag includes 25 native tree and shrub seedlings that are well-suited to streamside conditions. This year's species* are red osier dogwood, pussy willow, silky dogwood, red oak, and white spruce. The seedlings are approximately 1-2 feet tall and bare root, except for the red osier dogwood, which will be cuttings or “live stakes.” Cuttings do not have roots which makes them easier to plant but they require frequent watering to keep them moist after planting. Tree and shrub seedlings are provided by the Colonel William F. Fox Saratoga Memorial Tree Nursery. *Species selection is subject to changes based on availability and number of applicants. Who is Eligible Anyone who owns land in New York State with at least 50 feet along a stream or waterbody is eligible to receive a free bag of seedlings. Organizations or individuals with permission to plant on a given property with stream or waterbody access may also participate.
