The recent ruling in Charnell Commando and Others v. City of Cape Town underscores the critical need for municipalities to uphold their constitutional obligations in providing emergency housing, particularly in the face of gentrification. The Constitutional Court's decision highlights that the City of Cape Town's failure to develop a reasonable Temporary Emergency Accommodation Policy was not only unreasonable but also perpetuated the legacy of spatial apartheid. This case serves as a pivotal reminder that urban development must prioritize community welfare over profit, ensuring that vulnerable populations are not displaced without adequate support. The court's directive for the City to implement a policy that considers individual circumstances and provides immediate accommodation reflects a progressive approach to housing rights. It emphasizes that local governments must actively engage with affected communities to foster inclusive urban environments. As we reflect on this case, it is essential for stakeholders in urban planning, social justice, and community development to advocate for policies that protect residents from the adverse effects of gentrification. The ruling is a call to action for cities worldwide to reassess their development strategies and ensure they align with human rights principles.#HousingJustice #Gentrification #UrbanDevelopment #SpatialJustice #CommunityEmpowerment

What’s in it for Yerrabi? - The last few months we have seen several policies released by the Canberra Liberals, exploring what a fresh opportunity looks like for the ACT. Putting your suburb first, making our city safer, a better education system and targeted relief to help pay the bills, are just some of the initiatives. But I have been asked what that means for Yerrabi. In this short Op Ed, I have a look at some of these in focus. More to follow!

Small towns desperate for workers According to The Wall Street Journal, small towns in the United States are finding it challenging to attract and afford qualified staff for public sector positions as younger workers are avoiding these jobs. According to federal data, public-sector workers in rural areas are often older, posing a challenge as baby boomers retire. Small-town officials need help finding the right staff and offering competitive salaries. This has led to some disbanding of local services, pulling workers into multiple roles, or rehiring retired employees.
