This summer, we had a brilliant road trip around France visiting friends, ending with a few days in Paris. We were fortunate to attend Day 1 of the Paralympic Athletics at the Stade de France – a fantastic stadium, where we witnessed record-breaking performances (and accompanying bell-ringing to mark their victories!) in both track and field events. What an awesome summer of sport #Paris2024 delivered!
Anyway, back to our day... that afternoon - the last day of our holidays - we walked around (wet!) Paris, ending up at the Eiffel Tower by night (thankfully dry by then!). We’d assumed – having not been able to pre-book tickets – we’d be admiring it from below (per the pic!). But to my amazement, there was no ticket queue and we were soon 'launched' almost 300m to the summit (the lift is really speedy!). I was all for it – but as it turned out, fear overwhelmed me and I spent the whole summit time back-flat against the inside walls! I just about managed to do an odd splits / squat-style lurch for a family pic (not shown here – it’s not ‘public worthy’ haha!) – before being relieved to get back to ground level asap!
It’s not something I’ve experienced before (and I'm in the scary rides queue with the rest of the family at Chessington, etc...!), but it turns out being 300m in the air, on top of a metal pin-shaped construction is not for me (well, when you put it like that….!).
Looking it up though, 6.32m visitors came to the Eiffel Tower in 2023. I feel pretty sure someone else has had a similar experience!? (Those who've been keeping track of my travels will know this is all the more odd... and sickness rather than fear was my 5,000m+ challenge!).
Anyway, back down from dizzying heights – I’m now very much enjoying being back at my desk and getting stuck into new projects. So - what is it that you don't know about your employees, clients, customers? Perhaps it's not a fear of heights (!) - but maybe something else cropped up for them over the summer. What's the biggest challenge your employees, clients, customers are facing?
If you're not sure how to ask, drop me a line. Let’s have a chat about how we can find out, turn those findings into actionable insight, and help you to help them grow.

🥇 Olympic Games – Paris 2024 🥇
The Versailles Castle, the “Grand-Palais”, the Eiffel Tower, the Invalides, the Concorde place … These cultural and historical Parisian venues all have one thing in common : they all host Olympic Games events.
Furthermore, the innovative opening ceremony benefited to Parisian culture and history. Indeed, “Notre-Dame” cathedral, the Louvre Museum, the Orsay Museum, the Eiffel Tower were all at the forefront of the international scene and billions of people have been fascinated by them during this iconic ceremony.
The experience of the OG in London in 2012, where museums were empty, certainly led the organization of Paris 2024 to be the spearhead in trying to bring together sports and culture. We can noted that Los Angeles also wishes to promote culture in 2028, showing a lasting shift in attitudes.
What will the ROI be for the city of Paris ? Can this strategy attract new audiences ? Does this model pave the way to a new way of communicating arts and culture ? These questions embrace topics that will be at the heart of “Culture Business”.

So as I wait to board the Eurostar home…. what did I ‘learn’ from my two weeks on holiday at the Paris Olympics?
- My language skills are (embarrassingly) bad, but there are plenty of people that can make up for my skills gap to help me achieve what I need.
- Sometimes coming second is something to be celebrated, but we do not do that enough.
- Olympians are ordinary people. Whilst their dedication and skill are awe inspiring, they have jobs, they have families (huge shout out to the parents competing!) and they face challenges, just like the rest of us. You should aim high with your goals and let your knock backs help you come back stronger.
- Every successful individual has a whole team behind them without whom they fail, however small their role may seem. Surround yourself with the people who will build you up and help you achieve your collective goals, there is strength in diversity.
- Seeing whole crowds adopt a new nation, swayed by a single resolute fan, shows that people will follow leaders they can see are putting their heart and soul into supporting those around them to help them achieve their best result.
- As world records continue to tumble, we need to embrace advancing technologies otherwise we will literally get left behind and overtaken by others.
- Sport has the power to do so much good but, with many Parisians leaving the city during the games it is clearly not for everyone. It is not always one size fits all.
- I need to switch off from work more regularly (and effectively) to make sure I recharge successfully, spending more time with great friends.
Paris, you have been magical ✨ Now to start planning LA 2028!

LeBron James is probably as famous as Mbappé worldwide. And guess how he and Team USA 🏀 traveled during the Olympics? By train! 🚆
This is the first time we’re seeing an Olympics 100% accessible by public transport. Parisians were bracing for a transport nightmare, but eleven days in, there’s nothing but smooth sailing on the train and metro lines! 🙌
▶ The journey started pretty grim 😅: On the first days of the Olympics, three TGV lines were sabotaged and RER service to the Stade de France was disrupted. However, France's and Paris' transport networks pulled off a spectacular recovery.
Thanks to the preparation by RATP and SNCF, with tech teams on standby and rigorous rail checks, the system is now running smoothly. 🔧
▶ Results? Better than expected! 🎉 95% on-time suburban trains and a perfect 100% for the line serving equestrian events in Versailles, even with 500,000 extra passengers. This is far beyond the usual summer traffic in Paris! 🚇
▶ Sending a message to the world 📣: The American basketball team, led by LeBron James, traveling from London to Paris and Lille by train, is sending a powerful message: it is convenient and safe for international stars to take the train and travel more sustainably.
If the US basketball team, with its international NBA players, can do it, why couldn’t the French football team do the same for their national tournament? 🏀
▶ Can L.A. keep up with these standards? 🚌 Paris’s extensive network sets a high bar for future Games.
Unfortunately, Los Angeles doesn’t have such an extensive metro, suburban, and bus network. They’ve got four years to step up their game! 💪
What is certain is that Paris has set a precedent for sustainable transportation during the Olympics, creating a legacy to be carried on! ✨
Kudos to everyone involved in this logistical marvel – you’ve turned potential chaos into a gold-medal performance! 🥇
And good luck to Team USA for their quarter-finals today! 🏀

=========
Hi, I'm Claire, and every week, I share insights at the crossroads of strategic communications and sustainable mobility. 👋 Let me know if you enjoyed what you just read!
Watching sports is a favourite pastime of mine, which is why I'm eagerly anticipating this Friday and the official opening of the Paris Olympics 2024. The image captures a circle at the tip of the plane wing - the newly constructed main stadium for the London Olympics in 2012. Despite some initial complaints from locals, the 2012 event turned out to be a memorable and enjoyable experience for many.
Large sporting events like these can unfortunately be subject to sports washing by corporate sponsors and can have high expenses that price out many individuals from attending. This raises questions about the future of such events and the possibility of implementing changes.
Exploring options like hosting across multiple cities/countries with existing infrastructure or organizing a series of smaller events could potentially reduce costs, enhance local participation and sustainability.
The photo, taken in 2016 during a flight into London City airport, captures a moment from the past when air travel was a more common part of my routine.

"Thousands, maybe millions, of people will surge into U.S. cities in the next few years for mega-events. They will visit cities throughout the country for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and 2026 World Cup, and then Los Angeles for the 2028 Summer Olympics. The public transit agencies serving these areas will be challenged to 'not steal the headlines' from the events, as Phillip Eng, GM and CEO of the MBTA, stated at the Mobilizing Millions: Optimizing Transit for Mega Events Session at the 'American Public Transportation Association's 2024 TRANSform Conference." https://lnkd.in/eDkJwqja#APTAtransform24
The global spotlight will turn to Paris tomorrow, as the #Olympics Opening Ceremony lights up the Seine to declare the 2024 Games officially open 🎉
Here East will be in Paris, growing our global impact, helping bring focus to our campus on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and to promote London and its growth strategy. We look forward to participating in key meetings with the international business community and London & Partners during the opening ceremony weekend at #TeamGBHouse.
This will be a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the Olympic spirit that connects people from different corners of the world, but it will also draw a parallel between Paris and London – highlighting how an #OlympicLegacy can spark positive change in a host city.
So once all the medals are won, what long lasting impact could the Olympic legacy have on Paris?
Look no further than Here East – an ecosystem of innovation, culture, and entrepreneurship borne from the former Press and Broadcast Centre for London’s 2012 Games. As a proud pillar of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park’s regeneration story, our campus is harnessing East London’s Olympic legacy every single day to drive positive impact in East London and beyond.
What does this impact look like? Keep your eyes peeled for our Impact Report which will be launching very soon. This report will provide a dynamic snapshot of Here East’s positive impact on the local community over the past year and outline our vision for pushing boundaries on a global scale in the future 🚀
